They both have the same impact on the brazilian people, i.e none.

Well sympathy became prevalent in humanity as a way to ensure group survival. Since the facilitation of the movement of information a human could feel sympathy for someone on the other side of the Earth. Also sympathy is meant to elicit a reaction that would help the person that you feel sympathy for. That is where the helping part of the situation comes from. Relating to facebook, people on the website replace effective methods of helping with a share in a hope that it increases awareness. However as long as people share the information without acting on the information then the sharing is rendered ineffective in helping the people in turmoil. Finally, whether or not you feel sympathy for the people is rendered, to a point, useless because you are neither helping or worsening the situation.m8son wrote:lol yh that was a pretty ridiculous statement.hubb wrote:You know yawning is contagious, right?m8son wrote:yeah i suppose any form of sympathy is pretty pointless, apart from from an ego stroking perspective.
Same goes for empathy and it's hardly pointless. On a biological level it's probably the main trait that has evolved us as a group past....hmmm .. dunno badgers?
What i meant was in this specific example how does my sympathy for these people help their situation? They are ignorant of my sympathy and would be in exactly the same position whether i was sad for them or if i was cheering their eviction.

How is Stop/Start technology in cars more economical than leaving your engine to idle?
Remember the episode of Top Gear where they tested it and concluded that if you're planning to nip into a shop for a minute or two you save more fuel letting the engine idle rather than switching it off, as starting up from static uses more fuel?

I can only speak for myself but the heat from my hummers exhaust is only lukewarm, at best
Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
i had that, it's why i started running mine on leaded fuel again, harder to get but so worth it

Re: Post Your Random Thoughts Thread!
I have a similar setup to this to dissipate the heat because the bakeries were complaining too often

well what i was saying isn't about being able to actively improve these people's situations yourself, but i think any sort of information which brings your attention to new injustices is worth sharing about - especially in this case where poor locals are being evicted for the benefit of richer people throughout the rest of the world. understanding at whose expense you gain privilege can't be a bad thing... too easy to take things for grantedm8son wrote:No, please explain.chekov wrote: it helps to create an awareness of things that are happening beyond your immediate (privileged) experience of the world
if you can't see why that's a positive thing it's not really worth the effort to try and explain
In what way is it objectively a positive thing?
When i first read somewhere that all these people are being evicted, nothing positive happened, i just felt sad for these people. The situation has in no way improved for the Brazilians from my knowledge of their misfortune.
also re the worldview thing, i think the more you understand different people's experiences of life, the more nuanced your own can become and you can step outside your white, middle class, home counties upbringing and try to understand why different people feel differently about things. only seeing things from one perspective is the kind of ignorant anti-intellectual mindset nobheads like the ukips can thrive in
also, your general mindset of people never being able to achieve anything (not just on this topic) is the kind of apathy which really irritates me and is in my opinion why this country is gona go down the shitter over the next few decades as politicans reckon they can get away with fucking off everything that made britain kind of alright since the end of ww2 and dismantle the welfare state
