The Manga Thread

Post by NickUndercover » Thu Jul 10, 2014 8:01 am

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking. "Manga is for otaku and neckbeards who never see sunlight" "Naruto lol" and so on...
Let's break that taboo.

Image
Possibly the greatest one ever made. A man naming himself "Friend" starts a sect that quickly grows beyond everyone's control and hides a dangerous agenda. A shopkeeper realises Friend uses references, stories and ideas that only he and his group of childhood friends know... Who is Friend and what does he want ?

Image
The story of Miyamoto Musashi, most influencial swordsman in Japan's history, told and drawn by Inoue. Starts as a pretty standard samurai seinen then turns into the spiritual journey of a man who wants to end the circle of violence.

Image
From the same author as 20th century boys. A story that postulates there is an evil force at work behind every major event of history. VERY well researched and interesting, there's the assassination of JFK and a memorable conversation where Hitler asks Einstein about time travel to get accepted into art school (IIRC).

Please keep the thread civil and serious. I'm not gonna give you links for where to read them but if you have fingers and know how to use google it shouldn't be too hard.

Just give those a try... Please ?

The funny thing is all the current Japanese kids won't read the classics, they just read Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, and whatever else is in print. Anything old in Japan is forgotten, or old to the young generation anyway (fax is still more popular than email between businesses, go figure)...

the whole of the akira soundtrack is a great listen. the sort of stuff you might be after (if you liked that one) you'll find in more of the cyberpunk flavoured anime film soundtracks, so i'd also recommend neo tokyo soundtrack (harder to find though i've not looked online) and the ghost in the shell soundtrack.

Shamo

A tokyo student snaps under the pressure and kills his parents. Sent to a special youth prison where violence is the rule, his only chance to defend himself is to take up Banryukai - The dirtiest style of karate, which aims to disable and kill the opponent by any means necessary. But when the time comes to get out, the only thing he can do in a world that no longer cares about him is hurt people... physically and mentally.

A wonderful and deep manga, beautifully drawn, and you can't help but root for the main character even though he almost only makes shitty decisions and ruins lives of people that are better than him in every way.

Also

Image

Oyasumi Punpun

Punpun's life, from childhood to an adult. Shaped by his dysfunctional family, his failed love life and his own flaws. You'll never see the protagonist's actual face - the author chose to draw a representation of his state of mind at each point of the story. You'll get a lot of strange feelings from this because there's always something in the story that hits very close to home.
