I'm not the greatest DJ, but slowly improving. But elements in the tunes (fills, stabs, filter sweeps, etc) will often dictate what to do when, I think.

It also helps going out a lot and listening to other DJ. You'll notice even the best have little mess-ups when you really pay attention to it. But you don't because you as a listener focus on the whole experience, which the audience does too. As you progress, those little mess-ups will go away anyway.

If you can beatmatch and pick dope tunes, you've already done most of the work, I believe.

Try drumfunk m8. Or other chopped up stuff. Mixing Equinox, Tech Itch and Paradox tunes can be a bit of a challenge, but it's reaaaallly fun.

:) I can imagine

mixing RP Boo's music is pretty hard too, if you wanna go more 160bpm territory

Drop it on the one. Catch the tempo wherever you can but make sure you mix it at the beginning of the next musical phrase.

Roll with the punches is pretty easy, only thing is that it starts on the second beat.
You have that clicky woodblock-ish sound in the intro, that hits on third, like the snare.

;) try it

Mixing into Roll with the punches is pretty straight forward, its getting out that is troublesome,

Even when you're well beat matched most tunes just sound like shit over Roll with the punches' kick pattern hah. I've found a few decent blends out of it though after a lot of trial and error.

Most of the time though, I just play Roll with punches last and end the mix/session on that tune :)

I think I got Kode 9 - Stung to mix out of it pretty well once.

Its true though, the tune doesn't really have a place where you can proper blend out of it or even just cut to another tune.

Johnlenham wrote:Things like EQs, So I mix a non vocal into a vocal, I knock the mids down on the non vocal right? but what about the highs?
Generally speaking, outside of cutting the bass on the 2nd tune, I have no idea what im doing with them.

Is pulling the previous tune out literally just a feeling in the end? like I find myself mixing things like grime for over 32 bars and it going ok and other times swearing out loud because had I cut the last tune off a bar ago instead of riding it longer It would have been sick etc
Aside from the standard bass lower on the one coming in, switch the bass when it drops.. there isn't much that you "need to know", its just getting the tunes balanced and, more than anything, pissing around. I dunno about anybody else but I don't tend to knock the mids down on a non-vocal track I raise the mids of the vocal track, might sound basically the same but if you have both tunes with all the EQs set at 0 and you knock the mids down the vocals will be louder than the non-vocal mids but it'll still be competing with 2 sets of highs and lows at the same volume. Having them all normal and raising the vocals just means it'll overpower everything and sit better on top, I assume its useful if the mix isn't harmonised because any clashing highs will be less obvious if the vocals are louder.

As for mixing out:
RIZ LA TEEF wrote:and putting echo/delay on when mixing a tune out sounds good as well, whether you rewind it, or echo a vocal for example etc.
This is key for mixing out vocals especially in grime. Grime vocals are normally quite aggressive and when you mix out to just an instrumental, unless theres a lot going on, it'll sound like theres a bit of a void and whenever you mix out, no matter when you do it, it'll probably sound choppy. Stick some delay/echo on the last bar of the vocal and stop the tune after that bad and it'll echo out, just makes it sound really smooth. It takes a bit of practice but it's something well worth getting under your belt, as Riz said you can also just add the effects and rewind.

Soundcloud

1:11:20 - the mix out of the vocals on Wiley - And Again you can the very last bit of Gods Gifts verse echo and fade out. Its not completely obvious though because hes already lowered the bass, highs and volume in general.. thats another thing if you're blending vocals over the top of an instrumental you can gradually start to lower the highs/low/general volume during the mix so the tune is a lot "emptier" when you mix out which'll make it sound less choppy and it won't sound like theres a big of a void being left.

Actually skipping through that mix the mix at 27:30 is a better example.

Uno also loves an effects drenched wheel: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x21c5x ... -two_music @ around 9 mins and no doubt numerous more times throughout.

LAS - Pirates goes well with it, as does Silkie - Poltigiest

Easiest way ive found is to cue up your next tune halfway thru the second melody section, the higher more eski sounding melody. Then if you find the right place the 2nd tune should drop when Roll comes back into the more dubbed out 'A' section, more space & less clutter whereas that hi melody clashes with most tunes.

Granted you have to play it for a long while b4 the mix but its such a tune doubt anyone would mind. & strangely i rarely hear it played out.

and orchestral lab is just as "halftime" as every single tempa release from the last four years. snare (edit: clap) on 3. ;)

don't trust any BPM numbers. trust your ears. don't look up the bpm and tell yourself "so this is 138 and this one is 140 so I have to notch it down by x.x%..." it's bullshit. 90% of all turntables' pitch faders are fucked anyway.
