I slice up random shit to a drum rack all the time and fuck about. But I don't really have a choice in taking a break anymore because my computer fried the other day :q: So im either gonna have to scrape together some cash for a new computer or I'm just gonna say fuck it and get an sp 404. So lame too because I had some IMO decent shit for tuna! this week.

This is something I've been experiencing also. I think that we as producers are our own worst critic so we tend to overthink things whig leads to stress and frustration. Eventually we get so frustrated that we forget to have fun with our music. My best tracks have been the ones that I have had the most fun on. Thats why I love collaborating with other artists. Just try not to worry about getting everything perfect so much and have fun making your song. That will also help you to understand how to fix any issues you may run into.

just dont make anything for a bit- you can come back in a couple of week with some fresh ears and listen to some of your half finished ideas and they wont seem so bad

I find myself worrying too much about it sounding like accomplished artists. I find myself changing bits because it doesn't sound like something Artist X would do, therefor cannot be good enough. In all honesty it's causing me great stress! Trying to learn how to relax and be confident in the work I create but it's damn difficult.

Can definitely relate to this. Over the past few weeks since I've started to get back into production I've found myself opening up my daw and tapping out the tempo of a track I was just listening to, even starting with the same key, but soon getting fed up and abandoning the project just because it doesn't have that same "feel" that I was hoping to emulate. I also find myself hitting a lot of dead ends when it comes to building a decent melody which is really frustrating when one minute I'm really feeling like I'm in a really good flow. I've found taking a break does help a lot but it is hard for me to fight the compulsion to try and make something at least once every day. Since I started I've been going through this cycle of successfully finishing a project or two; compulsively trying to recreate those successes every day; getting fed up when I'm not getting anywhere; giving up and taking a long break from doing anything (latest and longest was 2 years before reinstalling everything, getting my midi controller back out and starting again a month ago); trying again out of curiosity, boredom, inspiration from new music or picking up some new tips or knowledge that I want to practice; annd the cycle continues. At the moment, I'm determined to start giving myself a bit of a break now and then and maybe just doing some sampling or something else.

FUCK TAKING A BREAK!!!!

sorry but this is really bad advice. What - Your just about to create something genius then...you take a break...forget your thought pattern...smoke a splifff...watch a movie...Nah.

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO

You need to go into the studio KNOWING how to finish a tune. Sounds like you don't know how. Don't worry, it takes practice. Actually it's pretty simple. You need to decide on how many elements to have in a track before hand and then make sure your have those in and no more, working on those as much as possible ( of course you can bend the rules). You also need to try and finish the track there and then if possible, at least in demo / rough format (although this depends on the individual)

Some of the best prodcuers go into the studio and stay in there all day without a break and write an album.

I think what you're saying is true. I never have any real sense of direction when I start producing, just kinda go with the flow, though this may be counter productive as you spend too much time pissing about. It's just taken me almost 4 weeks to make my last tune and I think it's down to being indecisive.

Seriously after a couple of hours i belive that your brain stops working properly and ur ears get fatigued. so staying in a studio for 12 hours isnt really that good for the creative process. its fine if ur just recording some already written material but for writing tunes its awful without regular breaks even if its just going for a walk.

This is probably closer to the truth. It's obviously a personal trait as opposed to one that happens when it comes to producing, which makes it more frustrating. I think making music is overthought, it is by me anyway. No one really cares if you're making tunes, it's not expected of you, so there's no pressure at all. It should just be you doing your thing, and enjoying doing it. Not getting stressed about it! I guess it's just a result of caring about it though.

sometimes it's easier to just accept that it's not going to happen.

channel that creative energy into something else--cooking is where i usually turn.
