so i drag it in, does nothing, drag it in again onto the slot and it asks me if i want to convert into harmony, melody, drums, that works fine for doing a beep sample, totally fucks up trying to use a badly cut vocal

I'm not quite sure what you're asking now, but you shouldn't need to load the sample again. Just change the sample start point if its greyed out.

?

you can edit what part of the sample you are playing there - also you need to make the midi notes as long as you want it to play (can get some getting used to)

Fiddle with the ASDR settings in sampler/simpler as well as the MIDI notes.

but yeah, the graying out would be caused by the start/end points being fucked up.

actually, what color is it exactly?

bright green, dull green, darker green / olive, or black? (talking bout simpler here actually)

errr think i'd followed lye's pictures already, but that last stage doesnt come up, it's in the sampler, orange and grey coloured, starts on zero, but doesn't go into piano roll/seem to register as having anything to play

Does bit depth affect this stuff? How many bits is your sample?

Sorry, been a while since ableton.

1. Is the channel the sampler on 'armed' for midi/note input (that lil red box)?

2. Does the sampler make sound (with a sample in it) when you hit keys?

If youre just trying to get to piano roll, make you've created a clip on the same channel. You can switch between piano roll and the sampler/effects chain by clicking the 'tab' right to the left of where it will say 'sampler' in the lower right corner. (vice versa to get back to the sampler/fx chain)

I'll tell you, but you're not allowed to call it dubstep.

thank yall for sampler help, another one, basically im trying to use a vocal loop that sounds cool, but its 3/4 of a bar in length, so about once in 4 it sounds sick and otherwise a bit shit, does anyone have any tips for this kind of thing (it sounds best looping so cant just hit it on once), like best way to get a vocal bit hitting on the beats to make it funky

should i just work on finding something else instead,

stretch it (not in sampler) so that it's 1 bar long instead of 3/4 bar long. make sure to change the warp mode from beats to complex pro, i wish it wouldn't default as beats.

you can also crop it or adjust the start and end of the loop to get it more exact.

(you prolly knew that though lol)

I look at these things like an opportunity. Not to sound like Bob Ross, but, these gaps and failures to fit, I use them to create interesting moments, or little micro hooks.

Like in this case, you could glitch out a syllable, by repeating it, or repeating while adding another fx chain to it. You could just do a really quick delay throw, or reverb throw. You could slow down the last part of the phrase, like a record/vinyl/tape stop. You could load the last part of the phrase into a sampler, and find a little micro loop in the syllable, set the start and end points of your loop to a fader/mod wheel and play through the syllable, you can really make it sound like the singer held the note or whatever. Play with the loop crossover, or whatever your sampler calls it, where it takes some of the sound from around the out point, and blends it with the in point. Drop that shit into a granular sampler, and find a grain size with as smooth or as glitchy sound as you want.

You could just repeat a word of the phrase, or a syllable. Or you can reverse the end of the phrase, or reverse and do all or any of the other things I just mentioned.

Or you can get a bit of vocal chop from another phrase from the same track, or same artist, or even from another artist. Or just some random sound.

That's just some ideas, but the point is look at that incongruity as an opportunity to do something unexpected, interesting, bring something to the phrase that wasn't there or that we wouldn't expect. Honestly, there are probably twenty metric tuns of 1's and 0's worth of digital music where everything fits right and feels good. Don't be so ready to cast yourself into that forgettable heap.

thank you noways

lot to work on there, will incorporate that in next project, here the irritating thing was how close the original was to perfect, the tunes moved on a bit and i think the idea in that loop was actually a bit shit and some better sounds have come up

Well big ups to you for staying open for the right sounds. Sometimes we can get stuck in sounds or parts of songs that aren't right, but that we've put a lot of time and energy into. Fuck that, blow that stuff away, and keep looking for what is right.

Do any of you guys know the song I'm Weird by Ghost Town? There's a snare in there that has a nice sound but I can't get it no matter how hard I try. I can't get the sound of the tail or body or tbh the whole sound. Can anyone help me please?
