Definitely recommend the book too then, more of the same but in more detail. Went through reading the book and watching the shorts as I went. Watching all the feature length ones would have taken years.DiegoSapiens wrote:yes!!! is amazing, didnt know there was a book tooleyenda wrote:That the Story of Film documentary? I still think his best is probably The Game but I'm a sucker for noir/crime stuff. In general I still think he's got a pretty good style but usually doesn't choose to make films that are good. Fight Club is a good example of his nice direction but the source material doesn't hold up that well to lots of repeat watches which I did when I was a teenager. Give him a Kaufman script and he'd probably knock it out the park.hubb wrote:I used to really rate Fincher but I'd argue he is a bad director now tbh

I enjoyed Fight Club more I think.
His version of Dragon Tattoo is generally not seen as worse or better than the original.
I have only seen the latter so I can't really comment.
Haven't seen Social Network, but with so many positive critic reviews it can't be that bad surely
The subject doesn't really interests me though.

I hope I'm correctly understanding that comment.
I don't value popular opinion as such. It's just that the critics I usually read were generally positive towards The Social Network. You could reply the same way to people just hating every box office hit.
This thread is mostly just people randomly saying what they watched without any valuable discussion
going on anyway

But to be fair, it's more that it shows that he can't pick a script that hasn't already asserted itself in some other way in the public domain.
Fair enuff to pick a book that is of the times, like fight club was. It had some valuable critique on consumer society and seven had bits of that aswell. + they where sort of weird and original...
The social network seems like a commercial for facebook.
There's no way to make a film like that, that would present a genuine critique in that context. So what he does is try to make it a historical film, where for example there's suddenly exaggerated twin villains to make it a bit more interesting.
But it seems childish to just represent the winning side, because it will make it a less risky film and more edible. Drama is cheap.
It's basicly Fincher or the script writer, bowing down to or being so infatuated with the idea of some kid having so much money (and therefor power) that it loses all the critique or relevance. It becomes a sportsfilm. The same thing goes on in house of cards, where it's only the excersion of power that interests them, it's not a political show at all. They just try to impress us with how a very unrealistic guy does a few power moves. So the focus is on some actor that people already like.
They've even made the wife into Cruella deVille so there's no chance you'd be sympathising with her so the Spacey bumlicking can continue uninterrupted. And the chicks are hot and in the shows context, attracted to the same thing as the director, so they try to have our viewer dicks agree with that direction. pffft.

I don't cling on to anything. I'm not sure what you are basing that on.
I value critic reviews and now it's escalating into a discussion about my taste in films. If I were so hard for popular opinion I had already seen The Social Network.
I also take your explanation of why you don't like it into consideration. Mainly because I had exactly the
same interpretation of House of Cards.
You could well be right, although I'm not sure about what. Either I'm a sheep, which is think can easily be disproven simply by the films that I watch. Or that The Social Network sucks.. I haven't seen it yet.

critics are often full of shit tho, a large amount of them are fedoras.
I go to press screenings a lot and there are usually a number of actual fedoras in the audience.

Very true, that's why I only read reviews by people who I know will provide
me with a valuable perspective.
My theory is that it's better than wading through all the shit to find a few gems. It can be useful
information if you use it right.
This might create the false image that I'm not watching any films with bad reviews or that I want to
see my opinion validated by others.

Oh sorry m8, I didn't mean it like that at all. Just that in an argumentative sence, you actually used popularity as an angle, you know.AxeD wrote:I don't cling on to anything. I'm not sure what you are basing that on.

I'm not talking about your taste or behaviour.
And no I wouldn't even put it like that.. I dont think Fincher sucks, because he has made great films, it's more that he plays into all the shit instead of attacking it like in fightclub.
No, no ofcourse not. I can't on one hand argue for critical thinking and then forget about it the next secondThis might create the false image that I'm not watching any films with bad reviews or that I want to

Another thing is critics, they obviously end up mirroring the zeitgeist that the films put out to be able to stay in the job. It's a mutually dependant parasitic relationship in every sence. But the main reason for me being arrogant towards critics and not respecting them, is that with the films that do come out we can see they aren't doing their job or have somewhat lost authority, because every single film can not have a happy end if their critique actually weighs something. And I know it still does, because people generally tend to stay away in defining numbers from films that get bad critique. So in that way it actually falls back on the critics.

Just overheard in the office:
"I tried to watch City of God over the weekend, but it's got all those bloody subtitles."

Meus equus tuo altior est
"Let me eat when I'm hungry, let me drink when I'm dry.
Give me dollars when I'm hard up, religion when I die."
