How many years of experience? :/
I'm just wondering... how many years does it take for you to escape that "amateurish feel" to your songs? coz I've been producing edm and dubstep for only 11months so far, and yeah my songs sounds amateurish still. Is it true it takes 2-3 years of producing before you can actually make a very decent one? im just wondering and just curious...
so dont be mean if possible LOL
Re: How many years of experience? :/
How long is a piece of string? Keep chipping away at it and improve your sound, you'll get there. Good luck
Re: How many years of experience? :/
Its different for everyone, also depends on work rate. I've owned/used a DAW for probably about 7-8 years, but would still consider myself amateur, but I've never been fully focused on making music and have always had work and other priorities.

Took headhunter about 8 months from starting to produce to Tempa release if memory serves me. Made me sick.
I've been going 16 years and still aint escaped it.

I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

I saw Pete in here and was gonna rinse him about still being amateur but he did himself. Disappointed.

All that melts away when the lights are down and the bass is up.

Re: How many years of experience? :/
I think he meant that if the first tune Pinch made was Qawwali then it took him 0 years of experience as it got signed to Planet Mu.
Re: How many years of experience? :/
Yeah, Pinch pretty much instantly made a classic with no experience. Others it's taken a long time.. Thelem recently said hes been producing 7 years, although I really like his early stuff its only been since 2013 that hes really carved out his own unique sound.
Theres no set amount of time, some people can pull off something really unique and professional sounding right off the bat.. others never really get there (if you spend all your time making the same stuff over and over, using downloaded patches and copying tutorials on youtube, you'll never shake that amateur sound)
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=190899 << thread on how long it took people to finish their first tune, the variety of answers should also show there isn't one definitive answer to your question. As Goose said, keep at it and you'll get there. Patience is a virtue, don't rush it.. sometimes amateurish/musical naivety is a good thing.

Re: How many years of experience? :/
You basing it on the fact it wasn't his first tune released? I'm sure I read an interview that he went FWD, came back to Bristol inspired, tried out producing and made Qawwali pretty quickly. Could be wrong though, either way I think Pinch picked it up really quickly.Harkat wrote:pinch's first tune was not qawwali

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
qawwali is too sick for a first finished tune haha
think i read an old one recently too where he said he came back and started trying out producing with p dutty, so i'd imagine something like war dub would have been earlier

Re: How many years of experience? :/
Maybe that was it, I'm sure it was Qawwali tho cause I remember thinking wtf thats insane for a first tune. Its the type of tune he could have kept as a dubplate until Planet Mu asked to release it, would explain why it wasn't his first tune released.
Petes point about Headhunter reminded me of it.. everybody is different so 11 months and still not being completely happy isn't the end of the world.
