@progamer stuff: there's a ton of money being made, especially by the DotA2 guys (since Valve sets up enormous tournaments with copious pricepools to boost the game's popularity) and the StarCraft fam. check this site for a rather interesting overview of players' tournament winnings (these figures do not include the players' monthly salary and what I gonna call third-party income, meaning sponsoring etc).

yeah i know the league guys earn pretty damn well, and the LoL guys earn more overall i think, as this is just prize money. Sponsorships + streaming makes more money than prize money most of the time

guy I was friends with in high school ended up becoming one of the top ranked league players in the world after graduation, at one point he was #1 in whatever role he played. made bank for a while but then he started slippin, and unless you're really one of the best of the best there's not much $$$ in it
