Drones

Post by ezza » Tue Oct 28, 2014 6:01 pm

Whats your guys views on the use of drones for warfare?

have to do this ethics class and everyones like ye they're bad, they're unethical, but tbf its war... what is ethical?

a lot of argument about how people can't see them coming, so cant get away. surely if your trying to kill the enemy you dont want to see them coming

i dont know

interesting topic

I don't see how it would be more unethical than training people to kill honestly.

Normal airplane: guy sits in the cockpit and press buttons to kill people

Drone: guy sits behind a computer or some shit and press buttons to kill people.

because its killing suspected "terrorists" and denies them human rights, as well as putting everyone else in fear

the cameras on drones are not acurate enough to distinguish who is who. they're playing with peoples lives

in this case it's not about ethically killing people, it's about how you engage in conflict

and there's like 300 or more years worth of military and bio ethics if you want to read about this

I'd say the way they distinguish targets is the same for a drone strike as it is for
a strike with manned fighters.

It's not like fighter jets just fly around and pick out the biggest turban/beard.

That is a profound question.

I'd suggest you investigate the 10 commandments as it is a large input into your moral and ethical background, and specifically the 6th. Understand the ways in which רצח (retzach) has been translated. You certainly can ethically and morally kill, but you cannot ethically or morally murder.

Here you go:

Well, any kind of argument about this would need to establish if killing of any kind is moral, and then if any kind of killing in war is moral, only from there can you determine if drone killing in war is moral.

THEN you need to look at the practical implications of drone killing. What it means to warfare in general, what it means to the societies involved, those being killed, and those doing the killing. Further, not all drones are created equal. Some drones have remote human pilots, some drones only have human programers. Your country has developed a fearsome autonomous weapon:

Drones aren't accurate, despite being promoted as hugely accurate. So sending a drone attack on a target near a hospital or something would be extremely unethical.. knowing theres a chance it could kill a lot of innocent people. Being ethical in war would presumably be about picking a route which leads to the least innocent deaths/suffering. Drones have killed a lot of innocent people and if sending troops in or something else would have lead to a lot less deaths then obviously its an unethical choice.

Not going to war can be just as unethical as going to war btw, the Rwanda genocide is a good example of that.

Just because its "in times of warfare" doesn't mean innocent people won't be around that could be effected by the decisions we take against enemies. Otherwise we'd all throw nuclear weapons at each other.

The only time I support violence is when the violence is defensive in nature. Killing must always be a last resort. Drone use in Pakistan & Afghanistan is unethical from my point of view.
