Women's bodies have become part of the terrain of conflict, according to a new report by Amnesty International.
Rape and sexual abuse are not just a by-product of war but are used as a deliberate military strategy, it says.

The opportunistic rape and pillage of previous centuries has been replaced in modern conflict by rape used as an orchestrated combat tool.

And while Amnesty cites ongoing conflicts in Colombia, Iraq, Sudan, Chechnya, Nepal and Afghanistan, the use of rape as a weapon of war goes back much further.

From the systematic rape of women in Bosnia, to an estimated 200,000 women raped during the battle for Bangladeshi independence in 1971, to Japanese rapes during the 1937 occupation of Nanking - the past century offers too many examples.

apparently there's coordinated rape in the Kongo civil war aswell. from the beginning until now. and they'd slice pregnant women's (pregnant from their husbands) wombs - ethnic cleansing... rarely anybody ever talks about it, because it's old news and "the west" still feels guilty about Rwanda. multinational companies recruiting these militias to serve as security contractors, protecting their mines and wells, probably doesn't help the case, either.

I recall a paper by an israeli student; her thesis was, I believe, that the IDF doesn't rape palestinian women in order to underline the ethnic boundaries between the two parties. it's quite fucked up:

Yeah you're right I suspect it's more a case of "corrupting" the enemies gene pool rather than "cleansing" it. It does demonstrate the extent to which ethnic/tribal identities are considered important.
