wahhabism and other fundamentalist movements statred 19th century

only differene is back then less western intereference and no global media network to cover it

well yes, because these countries and their respective government were under strong western influence - take Iran for example. to be fair - in Syria and Lebanon, women can still wear short skirts. the term "middle east" covers a lot of ground that isn't as homogeneous as western europe. the "rise" of modern wahhabism (etc.) can be seen as a backlash against western imperialism, both geographic aswell as economic, but I think that's oversimplifying the issue - whilst Algeria was a french colony, sharia law ruled the muslim population. what would you make of that?
