The "Come Down To Us" voice on Burial's Rival Dealer EP

Okay, so, the title pretty much tells the story. I got intrigued about what the source was of those vocal samples; did some light Googling and turned up the actual person.

She was very pleasant and nicely gave me an interview for my blog, yeahigot.com. Although I did hint pretty heavily, she wasn't up for a phone conversation, so what you'll see is our e-mail exchange. (Well, most of it; I trimmed a bit for smoother reading and brevity.)

She turned out to be very similar to what I expected (which I don't mean in a negative way at all), and I don't think you'll see any surprises in the interview. But what I like about it is that she represents an intersection of worlds; the often-exclusive, arguably niche-genre world of Burial and the often-mysterious, arguably niche-interest world of science—and then, the world of mainstream American culture, which wouldn't know Burial from Four Tet or Hyperdub from an MP3-shaped hole in the ground. And so on, and so on.

Anyhow, I thought this would be of interest to the Burial fans in the room. Hope you dig it.

well said. American mainstream culture is to busy participating in the most comprehensive mental conditioning project ever developed to control peoples behaviors, attitudes and understandings.

I mean, thanks—but I wasn't trying to get all apocalyptically Chomsky up in this m.f.

I just think that, human nature being what it is, there's going to be a fairly homogeneous cultural mainstream and there's going to be a diverse cultural fringe. From small villages to vast nations, people are people; as the quantity goes up, the mainstream becomes more diverse and the fringe gets even richer and deeper.

But in a capitalism-based society, not everyone has the wherewithal, resources or, to be fair, interest, at the end of the working day/week, to seek out and track down the cool stuff around the edges. Not necessarily their fault; it's the system, man.

I'm not trying to open up a can of debate worms on this, though. Just an interesting side discussion. Thanks for checking this out, either way.
