Bintus - Against The Clock

Post by soronery » Wed Jan 07, 2015 8:45 am

In the latest episode, we headed to Bintus's cave of hardware. Previously known as Chrome Hoof's Milo Smee (plus other aliases, Kruton and Binary Chaffinch), Bintus has been releasing banging techno by the likes of Ed DMX, Mark Broom and Objekt on his Power Vacuum label as well as his own productions. Last year he released his debut album, Live* and Locked, a record that FACT's Angus Finlayson described as "easily the weirdest, most inventive Bintus productions to date."

Bintus's Against the Clock isn't here to take any shit. It's hard, it's heavy, and it's groovy and squelchy as hell. For more on Power Vacuum, head to www.powervacuum.net

bit too pots and pans for my liking in the early going, then lost it completely when he started layering in the dot matrix printer and modem samples. came together for me in the last 30s or so but honestly not one of the better ones ive enjoyed in this series

old hardware spotting is quite nice though

alesis airfx on a shelf
yamaha ry30
eventide h3000
mpc1000 used as the controller for everything is a nice touch

Do you not know how to think outloud?

It is a bit too pots and pansy for me. Agreed. But he's got great edge on a lot of those sounds. Feel like I'd really like to jump into his studio.

I like this one for his technique/workflow, not so much the tune produced.

Honestly one of the better ones I've seen. I'll agree that in the end not exactly my style. But really interesting.

It sounds like a mess yeah, but that's because he seems to be actually fucking about and experimenting as he goes. Loads of these videos have dudes with a drum kit already selected and some patches ready to play a really generic chord progression with. At least he's fucking about and thinking out loud. Plus he's a sick producer on his actual releases. Check the Lightnin EP on Power Vacuum.

Yea. Agreed. Seems much more on the fly than a lot of these. :Q: Will check out that release.

No one's shitting on him, wolf. I agree, there are fakes, like they have the whole song laid out, and then just recreate it in 10 minutes (looking at you Rockonin). That's shit. But I also thought he did some of that too, like he had a lot of sounds ready to go.

I also like messy things, prefer them, generally. But I really don't like the sound pallet that he is working with. Like I just don't like 90% of the sounds he is working with, as a basis for the song. That is just aesthetics, and we don't need to have the same wolf vs aesthetics convo for the 83rd time.

I am fascinated and inspired by his process. I think all the newbs that come here should check this out. This is how to avoid that brick wall that they/we hit after you learn how to produce, but then you realize it is a shit tun of work, and not any fun at all. This is how you have fun, this is how you get to new places, this is how you invent.
