awards

Post by bribkin » Sun Oct 21, 2007 12:46 pm

Hello
so I've been wringing my hands all morning... and have now decided not to vote in the awards. It's nice for people to have recognition and I'm not against the awards per se. However there are so many amazing, talented, hardworking and lovely people who are involved in this thing, I can't bring myself to give any of them preference over others. I have very definite opinions about the music and DJs and producers, and what night is valuable for what, etc. etc. but i'm a keep that for the writing.

I especially would like to big up the Platform 1 crew though, because their task especially from a financial point of view is hard but really important to keep new musical talent coming in. Also Dub War for sticking their necks out and taking the live sound to the US. And Boomnoise for being a soldier.

AWARDS ALL ROUND FOR EVERYBODY
x

behind the scenes all the mods discussed the awards at length, and the pro's versus the con's. there's obviously the first and foremost issue of the competitive factor, which isn't always the best vibes to push. at the end of the day the mod's decided that it was best to focus on doing the awards for all the new names that have worked really hard to get through in 2007. the nominations process is good for that reason alone, because the lists really show how global the sound has become. in the producer category alone, there are over 70 names nominated. that's just massive if you think about it.

obviously, music shouldn't be about top ten's or top anything, but in the position that this forum is in in terms of representing the global scene, we felt that we wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't try and do it once again. internet voting is never a perfect process, but the anonymity of the internet is interesting in other ways.

i'm not voting because i don't agree with the stipulations on the "best newcomer" nominations. there's plenty of producers with forthcoming releases or without any immediately foreseeable releases that i think should be able to be nominated.

no love for the unsigned.

i can see where you're coming from and it's a valid point but last year we got complaints that we didn't make the nominating terms more strict, so this year we toughened it up all around.

well there was no boomnoise category!!
haha
category of his own

seen and actually thinking about it everyone whose taken it 2 somewhere abroad shld get a mention, especially where it involves sticking ur neck out. i was just really impressed with the story of dub war as i heard it recently.

oh i dunno. but u get what i'm saying, i dont wanna say platform one is the best night or dub war is the best night or anything, i just wanna say what they've done is big and why.

i guess it's quite nice to have it on a forum because at least ppl can say why they think yadda yah is big as well as vote - but maybe it should be more anonymous??

i'm still not against it i'm just.. ambiguous!

partly cuz i like dubstep as an escape from competitiveness but that's quite a personal thing i suppose.

not trying to have a go... but then why where there so few "best new xxx" categories?

e.g. best new label, best new radio show etc

everyone knows what the top labels and established shows and nights are... i think these categories could have been a lot more interesting/fun than a lot of the ones we have...

(probably just think that cos it would have given 3.5 a chance lol  )

because there would be too many categories then.. we could have best dj on every continent too, to push new names..
but instead having 50 categories (where 40 would look sad, poor and boring) we have 20 interesting categories BUT with top10 lists - so you will be able to find new names there too.

Ideally, I'd like to see the top 10 producers in dubstep take each other on in a battle royale ladder match in which a recording contract with BGM is suspended 30 feet over the ring for the taking.
