I'd happily throw my laptop in a river before i let someone pinch even a handfull of my records! Are you mad?

Also for the records i much prefer playing on CDs than a laptop (though obviously neither comes close to the real thing i.e. vinyl)

Something so wrong about looking at a computer screen while you mix!

£150 worth of vinyl or £450 worth of laptop with all your productions on it....they can have the feckin vinyl! personally i dont just have tunes for djing on my laptop, if it got robbed i'd have to start collecting samples all over again, re-install my games and progs and vsts, set up windows properly, blah blah fookin blah. i think you are the mad one sir!

Let's say someone's stealing your 50 records bag, 10 EUR/vinyl = 500 EUR/350 GBP...
50 of your best records :
1 - you'll never find the half of them again - priceless loss
2 - those you can find you'll have to buy one by one, which means you can add a couple of quids for the shipping cost.

Now someone's stealing your laptop. Ok it might cost you a bit more money but then :
1 - setting up a computer takes up to 2 hours
2 - your production stuff is regularly backed up, isn't it?
3 - man, looking for samples is fun... Once a year I burn my samples collection on DVD for the souvenir and never touch it again... Gives a fresh start anytime.

Vinyl is the most, and maybe only, sacred thing I own... 2nd would be production backups.

Whether you end up on vinyl computer or otherwise, dont hobble yourself with bad hardware.

Learning the different techniques on belt drives will make you extremely upset, if for no other reason, that you spent money on crap.

Having good turntables, and learning vinyl allows you to transition to a vinyl laptop system quite easily.

Putting the two together is where you'll end up anyway.

I don't know squat about DJ'ing, but the missus spins. And she would probably tell you to get the cheapest, shittest belt drives you can get, and once you're good on them, you can do anything. No one learns to fly on a jumbo jet.

I, however, would tell you to get Ableton (under 300 i think these days, new version soon though) and a midi controller with a crossfader, like the M-Audio X-Session (well under 100 notes), because if you don't DJ already, there really is no reason for you not to. You can do regular DJ sets without even having to beatmatch, and once you're samurai at it, you can do mad loop-based Hawtin-esque shit, well beyond what two turntables are capable of. Plus you can produce on it too.

if you do go the vinyl route, i have to concur that learning on the shittiest decks imaginable will make you a much better dj. if you are creative enough to figure out the workarounds for not having the tip top equipment, you can play on ANYTHING. i played for 3.5 years (when at home) on garage sale belt drives with a little dial for a pitch control. i could rock those fuckin decks, and when i got to play on technics, it was like driving a lamborghini after test driving a pinto.

vinyl is deffo the most fun..not that i`ve ever used cdj`s or traktor or whatever...but i cant imagine being without my vinyl and having fun ..havin a little scratch etc

the other 2 could be cool to us efor tracks as mentioned u cant get hold of though...old or new...to incorporate into a mix

i would say if any1 is interested in getting some decks..get decent gear like 1210`s... do not fuck around

+1! i learned to beatmatch on a borrowed set of belt-drive turntables and shonky gemini mixer after about a week of hard grafting and solid practice i had a shot on a mate's brand new 1210s and DJM600....

all of the above son! they're all tools and depending on what you've gotta use to bang the crowd into a frenzy, you'll have your choice.

personally i'd stick to vinyl and cds as almost every time i play somewhere at least one person's final scratch/torque/whatever will fail.

if you do bring a laptop always always ALWAYS bring back up records and CD's just in case your shit does fail.
