A lot of the music you played sounds either a bit Swamp81-y to me (think Mickey Pearce), or has a very strong (for lack of a better word) "nu garage" influence, which imho is a bit played out already. Most tunes sound much cleaner already, compared to early Wen, Beneath, Etch, Rabit etc. which was all a bit rough on the edges productionwise.blackdown wrote:generally, or in one particular place?jrkhnds wrote:Seems like the original ruffness has been lost a bit.
When a group of people stands in a circle and, on the count of three, everyone sings a random note, over a short amount of time, they will subconciously adjust their tuning and soon enough everybody will be singing the same note...

i don't necessarily disagree with your post, but it seems like nothing is ever good enough for DSF. people on here are always pushing, asking for more, more of this, less of that, do it differently, change it again and again and again.jrkhnds wrote:A lot of the music you played sounds either a bit Swamp81-y to me (think Mickey Pearce), or has a very strong (for lack of a better word) "nu garage" influence, which imho is a bit played out already. idk, maybe i'm just not used to this (no offense, and this isn't directed at you specifically jrkhnds) obsessive need for stuff that's new new new new new. it just is a little off-putting to me to see people constantly trying to push the producers and DJs forward, which is imo ultimately a fruitless pursuit, because there's nothing inherently better about "new" sounding music than old sounding music at the end of the day. i guess i just don't understand innovation for the sake of innovation. there's gotta be a reason behind it imo.
and maybe i'm wrong, but i feel that we could all be a lot more grateful as a community of mostly listeners that these people make this music available to us. what right do we have to tell them how to do it? i feel like this kind of rhetoric, at least on the margins, turns people off from trying to spread their music because it will never live up to DSF standards.
like i said, if these "forward pushing" posts were made less often, i'd probably agree with them - there's a place for that in music, but it just seems like a lot to ask to me. the producers and DJs are humans like the rest of us. and like i said jrkhnds, i don't mean most of that towards you, but towards the forum as a whole. your post was kinda the straw that broke the camel's back i guess.

You make some decent points and I get where you coming from. You've made clear we still tight, however, your post makes me want to elaborate a bit. Hope this doesn't come across as super defensive.
When thinking back to outlook, the one musical memory that seemed most overwhelming was the Tectonic x Keysound-night. You'd be wandering all weekend long all over the festival, yet nowhere else the music seemed so "special", so rough, authentic and distinctive. It was techno, but grimey, upfront, raw and, sometimes, a bit sugarcoated fi di gyal. It felt like us people dancing were part of a defining moment in this newer strain of dubstep (yh yh I know sounds very pathetic / heroic)... All in all it was one of the best dance nights I ever had. (Nearly) every single tune was very distinctive and you'd hear that tune nowhere else, since nobody else was playing that shit.
With the recent Keysound show, most of the tunes wouldn't sound too out of place in a MyNuLeng set (pushing it a bit here, am I).
I'm not judging that. I'm just making a statement. And I'm not demanding anything from the artists and labels. On a public forum, created in order to connect and discuss music, I think expressing your opinion is the point. Blackdown is a big boy and can take personal opinions at face value - as opinions of one guy out of a couple hundred listening to the show. We all know we're not entitled to X or Y, but we are entitled to our own view of things... Get me?
Btw. I still very much enjoyed the show and that one Lyeform tune with the big snare is peng.

Re: 130 thread
yeah definitely, like i said it wasn't aimed at you, your post just kinda "reminded" me that this is something i've been thinking for a while.jrkhnds wrote:We all know we're not entitled to X or Y, but we are entitled to our own view of things... Get me?
i've also seen lots of talk (on other websites too) about how dubstep is too dubby these days. it's just like the critics have banned dungeon (or made it unacceptable) and they're on their way to banning "dubby" and after a while there will be nothing left for producers to make. i can just imagine so many talented producers sitting around like "damn, i just can't catch a fuckin break can i."
and i don't see that amount of pressure from the fans in any other music scene to always push the music "forward," they seem to be more or less okay with stuff that's not 1000% original (or maybe I'm just not paying attention?). but maybe that's what makes our music so much better than their's and i should just stfu

Two things:DrGatineau wrote: and i don't see that amount of pressure from the fans in any other music scene to always push the music "forward," they seem to be more or less okay with stuff that's not 1000% original (or maybe I'm just not paying attention?).
1. You're on a "specialist" forum; different rules apply.

2. I think the dubstep community has always been on the look-out for fresh stuff and is comprised of generally, at least when it comes to music, open-minded people who will dig through everything they can get their hands on to find something new. It's why dubstep became big in the first place; because all the "heads" flocked to it like flies to light. Jungle and Techstep got stale? Garage too cliché? Grime too bro-y? Oh look, Dubstep!
that's what I think at least.
plus the "dubby" stuff - idk man, if people ain't feeling because it's getting repetitive again, so be it. Nobody's forcing the producers to cater to our tastes... I have a certain budget for records, and if they don't release shit I like, I'll just buy from other people instead who otherwise wouldn't have gotten my money. I'm pretty sure that works both ways around.
But in the end, if everybody feels the same and just doesn't like "dubby" stuff anymore, why keep it alive artificially and buy it regardless? If there's no market for X sound, they won't shift many records. It's not our duty to finance a producer's desire to produce and release his music.

Re: 130 thread
this is where i disagree. sometimes it seems like people adjust their tastes for reasons other than the music. they "artificially" dislike so-and-so sound or genre for whatever reason, not because of the actual sound. it's not a matter of keeping it alive for artificial reasons, it's that the market is dead for artificial reasons.jrkhnds wrote:But in the end, if everybody feels the same and just doesn't like "dubby" stuff anymore, why keep it alive artificially and buy it regardless? i'm not saying this IS what happened or is happening or that it's solely responsible for shifts in taste, but i think there is a strong element of it in this kind of music, definitely much stronger than any other music i've been exposed to.

Re: 130 thread
Mhm, wouldn't know about that... I guess there's a lot of music that I like and enjoy, but just can't be bothered to drop money on it since to me, a large amount of the music I buy is mainly functional and I already have these bases covered. Of course there are the "collectors" that won't stop until they have ALL the <insert label of choice> records but if I already have 50 "dubby dubstep"records why buy more? unless it's some really fucking big game-changing tune; hence the obsession with new and fresh stuff.

Re: 130 thread
moleskin's radar radio show last night was sounding really good, had to dip cos it got a bit hype to try and work to but the mcs were good "think you're a big man cos you went jail, you're an example the systems failed" lool
this and that last japan show last week just making it abundantly clear that grime needs more mcs
is anyone else rating the new novelist, after 1 chorus i was like this is fucking peak but thought it was a banger by the end

Interesting... glad you feel the same way about Outlook as we do, it was incredible. I doubt we're playing this year so its fun to savour the memory. The flavours you describe are many of (but not all of) the flavours we're looking to bring together.jrkhnds wrote:When thinking back to outlook, the one musical memory that seemed most overwhelming was the Tectonic x Keysound-night. I'm curious about the swamp/nu leng comparisons. For reference, here's ballpark what we played at Outlook (Fort set):
Epic Jam - dusk & blackdown
amen ra - surrender
E.M.M.A. -- LIGHT YEARS
Parris "Pressure"
wot do you mean (original) - dusk & blackdown
Drenched (Facta remix) - dusk & blackdown
Sly One "Cow Bell"
circula - deep data
Timeless - blackdown
Aphix "Sin King"
Back 2 go FWD>> - dusk & blackdown
Back 2 go FWD>> (Sweet 2 go sour mix) - dusk & blackdown
Caski "Tunnel Music"
Double Helix - Fugese
Filter Dread "Stolen Dub" [Ramp]
Girl Unit x Cecile "Club Rez (Rizzla's "Club Cecile" bootleg)
Lamont - Otherside
Wicked Vibez (Horsepower OG remix) - blackdown
Etch "Champion Dancehall"
Balistiq Beats ft Riko "Rise the Machines [Yardman riddim] (Sully remix)"
Murlo "Coral"
Prince Rapid "Prince"
Amen Ra "Wet Harmonic"
Peng One Two - dusk + blackdown
The Steppenwolf (Blackdown remix) - epoch
Moleskin -imagination pulse
Pinch & Mumdance Turbo Mitzi VIP
Damu - WhirlyBird
wot do you mean blackdown version
damu - ipolice
Bloom "Keyframe (Gage fukup)"
Pedro 123 "Turbulence"
Plastician "Spring_Roller (Roska's veggie mix)"
Detboi - Give Love
Etch - J Majik bootleg
Sticky & General Levi
Sully Blue
Sully M141
Sully - Solitaire
??? - Gremino
Sully - Checkmate
burial true love VIP
We may have switched things a touch but that was broadly the plan.
I'd also be interested in how you feel the last show compares to our all-Keysound RA set, which is here, whether you think it has that swamp/leng vibe or last week's show was a one off?
we dont get sent swamp tunes and while we play my nu leng productions when they comes along, i dont know exactly what they play in their DJ sets. but as for their productions they tend to be tougher and more direct than most of the rest of what we play.
Certainly that show was more percussive & rolling than others, or at least that was a dominant theme. some months there's a concentration of good 140 grime which we make a place for, others it can be more garagey or darker rolling etc. But oddly what i liked about that set was it was more focused; we spend hours planning shows where we try and join the dots between different clusters of vibes/sounds, whereas sometimes it's nice to mostly take one place/space and explore it.

Re: 130 thread
this is a really interesting point, because the same music can often be perceived different ways. one man's "rough around the edges/diverse" is another's "badly produced/incoherent". while i dont necessarily agree with your observation, i recognise the trend or dynamic tension well.jrkhnds wrote:...Most tunes sound much cleaner already, compared to early Wen, Beneath, Etch, Rabit etc. which was all a bit rough on the edges productionwise.blackdown wrote:generally, or in one particular place?jrkhnds wrote:Seems like the original ruffness has been lost a bit.
it's especially difficult to tell "clean" sometimes since everything's going through the rinse compressor, so edges get rolled off.
