Sound on Sound or Computer Music

Post by future producer » Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:02 pm

I was gonna subscribe to CM but then I just remembered SOS, does anyone subscribe to either of them? What do you like about them?

Cm is more computer music orientated (obviously) and probably in many ways would be more useful to the beginnere dubstep producer. I used to subscribe but i found myself getting bored after a while as i wasn't really learning much from it after 6 months or so....

I like SOS now cos it is a bit more pro and goes more in depth about a wider range of stuff... it is worth noting though that my day job is as a studio engineer recording rock bands and the like so i have an interest outside of dance music production and synths/samplers etc...

Go buy a few issues and read em see which you like more...

Remember u get free samples with CM every month which you don'#t get with SOS...

To be honest a real good middle ground is probably Future Music... if i had to reccomend a mag to a dubstep producer that's be what i'd choose!

hope this helps ;)

Sounds a bit stupid but I was more attracted to CM because of the DVD you get with some useful samples and instruments etc. I think I actually take your advice and get a copy of each and see whats more my thing at this time, dunno wy I didn't think if it.

u can get loads of tutorials and reviews on the net for nufink too...

something about having a physical copy to read though... really makes you bother with it a bit more..

You can get most of the articles from SOS on the net six months after they've been in the magazine.
Hmm....

If not all... andit don't cost much to get an online only subscription so you can get them online at the same time the magazine hits the shops!

Depends wot u are looking for, I read both magazines regularly however don't have a subscription to any (due to lack of funds from recent hardware purchases) but if ur lookin for a techy, professional approach, read SoS but if u need a basic overview on production CM is best.
And I also like the samples that come on the CM DVD :D

SOS gets my vote, I get every issue.

Remix is good too, but I only get it from time to time. They sell it in Borders bookshop in the UK.

I'm not a big fan of CM/FM, but their specials are almost always worth picking up. Like they'll do a full issue on Ableton, or Cubase 4, or they just did one on laptop dj'ing. They get to be much more in-depth than the regular mag, and are actually worth a damn.

SOS ain't what it used to be, it's dumbed down a lot in the last few years.
I won't be renewing my subscription, anyway. CM is fine for beginners, but it covers weird freeware and hardware that SOS doesn't. They also repeat their articles every 2 years. FM is ok.

i pick and choose between them all

SoS is the more 'advanced' of the lot in terms of the detailed approach and tutorials, but it doesnt get genre specific in the way fm/cm do

SoS tends to deal with a lot of hardware and a lot of the time this holds no interest for me as i'm software based with a midi controller BUT does fare well for some daydreaming at lunch time!

Future music used to always have buff chics holding the latest gear on the cover. They stopped when they got stick for it. Another time FM got caught copying SOS equipment reviews word for fucking word.
