Untrue - your thoughts

Post by quietmouse » Fri Nov 02, 2007 1:02 pm

Seems everyone's been pretty tight-lipped about this one, but for those of us that have been lucky enough to hear it, why don't we open up a bit and talk about it? And trust me, the rest of you don't have so long to wait.

After my first playthrough, the thing that comes to mind is that this is a much more subtle album than the first. Those driving, pounding, crisp Burial beats from the first album on still here - but they're also under a new layer of sound that was only touched upon originally. I don't mean the crackle, the samples that we're already familiar with... there's this new floating layer of sound at the top of it all, mostly coming from the vocal samples, which are stretched out sometimes into lovely nothingness. A layer of warmth, maybe, is the best way to put it.

This is Burial's most experimental, most expansive, and most daring work to date. He's drawing from a wider pallet of sounds, he's messing with arrangements, and most obviously he's working with vocals. Is he successful? I'd wager, for the most part, yes. He's pulled it off pretty well, but the album still has that rough edge like the debut. Which, to me, is a big part of the charm.

Big tracks to me - Near Dark (such an infectious vocal), Etched Headplate (my favorite vocal tweaking), Untrue (perhaps Burial's most experimental track as far as song structure goes), Raver (what a closer!).

Ghost Hardware is already a classic. The "filler" tracks (although maybe it's an injustice to call them that) are all great sounding... Endorphin is lovely and haunting. Other tracks are solid but not grabbing me at the moment.

Strangely enough, despite all the hype, Archangel just doesn't do it for me..

This album is going to get played many, many times. It's a lot to digest. But at the same time, it's a simple album full of emotion... What an experience to listen to it.

Sorry for such a rambling post, but I'm pretty excited as you can tell. So - your thoughts please. This is an awesome time to be a music fan and part of this community.

I listened to it 2-3 times this morning... Full opinion is forming but Archangel is definitely the song of 2k7 for me. Had to turn it off though as I'm away to see Modeselektor the night and needed something a bit more upbeat! :P

Retail outlets in specific countries started taking stock of the product a few days ago.

--edit, I just realised you can look on last.fm and see who has been playing it!

Uh, this definitely isn't a bragging thread... I just want to talk about how people feel about the album.

I mean, Boomkat ships today don't they, and other stores are already stocking it, so I'm sure there are plenty of people who already have their copies. Not to mention the promos that have been out for a bit now..

Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

It's strange to me that no one else is posting about the album :?

For all the hype you'd think they'd want to talk about it...

I've listened to it about 6 times now, and I'm still not quite used to the vocals. I preferred the stripped down vocal bits of the first album.

I know Burial has some rave-out tunes up his sleeve, so I'm looking forward to future releases. Especially that "darkside" album he mentioned.

Wasn't really expecting 'Untrue' to live up to his debut but man... Been on constant rotation since about 10 this morning when it got delivered! Whoever said about 'Near Dark' was right, but I can't really pick a fav at the moment.

Got my copy this morning and listened to it on repeat till now (and will keep listening till i get tired of it).
I really thought that was quite difficult to produce an album better than the first one, but sincerely this one does it and does it perfectly, definitely one of the best albums this year so far.
This is not only Dubstep, this is some schizophrenic r'n'b with alot of soul, 2-step with an old rave feeling, beats that are reminiscent of the trip-hop scene, even some dubbed out instrumentals.
Archangel is just how i'd suppose to be, a fantastic tune with some different feelings, one of the best tracks of this new album but there are some other big tunes as Untrue, Homeless and Raver, Raver actually is growing on me and will probably turns into my first choice of Untrue. Ghost Hardware it sounds even better on this album, maybe cos its surrounded by some other genial productions, its weird but its what i felt.

This is not only Dubstep... Burial is a genius and has crafted his own musical style.
