dubstep newb sayin' hi!

Post by djshiva » Tue Apr 18, 2006 6:16 pm

hey all,

thought i would introduce myself. i am a longtime techno dj (who also used to spin dnb) from the states who just discovered dubstep and i freakin love it! what a fresh take on beats and bass! i have been having fun incorporating tunes into my techno sets, and doing laptop sets of electro and dubstep. this is really giving me a new outlook on techno, as well as beats in general.

great stuff, glad to be here! :)

will do. playing a laptop set of electro and dubstep tonight for a local dnb night. will probably record it (provided my puter decides not to be cranky). just got into buying dubstep, so i don't have a lot, but expect some choice cuts from vex'd, toasty, loefah, blackmass plastics and boxcutter (my favorites so far, along with burial). :)

a quick question too, i know about bleep.com. any other good sites for buying mp3s? i spend the majority of my record dollars on techno, so i have been buying mp3s or CDs of the stuff that, frankly, is not what i usually get booked to play. any tips appreciated...

As far as I know, now that Hot Flush is available on Bleep, no you're not missing out on any other labels which are releasing MP3s. I don't buy em tho so I can't speak from experience.

Don't forget to check out:

Subtext
Road
Ital
Tectonic
DMZ

on Bleep as well if you haven't already.

Do you use Final Scratch or Serato Live (Rane)? Or just software?

for laptop sets, i use ableton live. it's just a little side project to entertain myself at the moment, and to learn my software even better (since that's what i use for production as well). i cannot part with my vinyl, but i mostly spin bangin techno...so the laptop thing is just for me to do something different, get to play some stuff that normally i would not play, and eventually to incorporate into vinyl sets as well. :)

i had a blast dropping the tunes tonight, and it WAS recorded, so i should have a link by later today. will post it here.

it's just more a refreshing change for me, ya know? i do love my four to the floor techno, but i have always loved unique sounds and weird, completely strange noises. there is some really good techno out there, but there are certainly pockets of stagnation here and there too. sometimes i even get lazy with my production, cuz i feel i am not pushing it sometimes, ya know? so i just avoid working on tunes cuz i feel kinda over it.

so essentially hearing some fresh sounds has really given me a bit of a kick in the ass to really push my sound and see where i can go with it. i listen to all kinds of music anyway, but this sound has definitely just given me a bit of lift, whether it's just listening to great tunes, spinning em, or just influencing my production a bit. :)

so all that just to say...it's making me happy and creative!

p.s. this post was written before my morning coffee, so forgive me if i am rambling.
