Warp Records wrote:ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Burial by name Burial by nature. Dubstep's biggest star, who paradoxically is completely anonymous and has barely any relationship to the rest of dubstep musically or within the context of clubbing, lets the almost forgotten ghosts of old 2 step and Omni Trio style jungle into his music on this second album.

Again it's incredible and completely unique. At times, the production sounds like it's been recorded onto 6th generation c90 tape, the tracks seem intuitively structured, the cracks and pops, muffled voices and distant field recordings are an even stronger part of the process. The delicate drum sounds have had alot more work and sound more complicated and well defined.

Burial's remarked that his tracks are like the glowing srebme of feeling you have after being at a club and this is a more lucid evocation of that uncanny feeling than the first LP, disembodied soulful voices of old two-step records like Dem-2's vocal morphing sounding soiled and degraded, add a really very strong emotional element to the music. Snippets of vocals singing about lost love sound passionate and sad, adding a haunting dimension that will send chills down your spine if you're in the wrong mood.

Some people will find some of these vocal snippets cheesy but those people are definitely missing the point. It may take a while to set in but Burial's smeary intuitive audio puzzle is rich and rewarding.

Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

"He confesses that his favourite sounds are sampled from Vin Diesel's car keys in a film..."

Dan Hancox had an interview with Burial in the Guardian on Friday. Here is an interesting quote:

"What I want is that feeling when you're in the rain, or a storm. It's a shiver at the edge of your mind, an atmosphere of hearing a sad, distant sound, but it seems closer - like it's just for you. Like hearing rain or a whale-song, a cry in the dark, the far cry."

That last sentence reminds me of my review of his last album in Vice:

"Can everyone stop saying that this is "a grower"!? This is the most uneventful, over-hyped piece of shit we've heard all year. If you're after an album that sounds like the mating calls between a group of libido-less whales, then run and smash open your little sister's piggy bank. It's boring, gawky 2-step with some token reggae samples and some crackles."

I don't know why I gave it such a harsh review. I guess I hate hype. It wasn't that bad, but definitely not as good as everyone was saying. Anyway, can you see how I made the whale connection? It's like man can see into da future, ya get me? Man's brain is just different like dat. Only (slightly) joking. Anyway, I don't see why I needed to point that out. I am quite looking forward to hearing the new album I think. Here is a recent song from Burial that I've been liking for the last few months:

Burial - Unite

If most of his new album sounds like this it should be pretty increible. In a way, this sounds like the best song Groove Chronicles never made.

i like it. not as much as 'burial' but still a tidy album.

not really feeling the rampant vocal samples to be honest, standout tracks are near dark, shell of light and raver for me...

This album is pure deepness. Make me wanna go out at night and walk in dark streets to suck it all in.
MrMongo wrote:i think one of the most compelling aspects of both "Untrue" and its predecessor is the way that it works so successfully as an album more than a collection of songs. this is evident on 'Ghost Hardware' which sounds so much better when slotted into an album format of Burials other productions.
absolutely agreed.. didn't rate it on the ep, but on the album it's just brilliant.

Weird. Ghost Hardware was my favourite Burial track the moment I heard it on the EP.

In McDonalds is absolutely amazing, the "You look different" vocal sample at the end is so sad-sounding.

And the vocal samples are brilliant. I don't think the beats are on the whole as good as on the first album, but the emphasis is more on the vocals this time round and i like that. I don't think it is better than the orignal, but i don't really wanna compare them.

Beatless interludes are also brilliant, none as good as forgive, but beautiful all the same

There's quite a few, Archeron, Cold Planet and two others that i don't know if they will get a release. Feral Witchchild (the first track) and Stairwell are being released in feb i think, but i reckon we will get others on future EPs like we did with Shutta off the last preview. No sign of Rain or Gaslight off that one either yet, so i reckon some will just get lost and never be seen

Deep, dark, melancholy, and beautiful from start to finish. He really could not have written it better to my ears, and I agree with the poster who said it feels like an album - variations on a theme - not a collection of songs. The ambient pieces are my favorite.
