So far the reviews are overwhelmingly positive ( with good reason ! ).

I came across funny and sometimes unjust comments about Burial's latest.

Here they are :

" I really can't believe some of the song names here. Could you get any more generic?

Raver?

Etched headplate, what is this, world of warcraft ?

Dog shelter? What is this, music for unwanted dogs?

Oh and the long awaiting 'in mcdonalds'. The song made while Burial ate a big mac. How deep.

Don't get me wrong I love burial but wtf...

And I find it very strange that has decided to put homeless uk raver in that order. Is this some sort of 'in' joke we are not aware of ? "

" His stuff is objectively bad music which appeals only on the most superficial level... no one's stupid enough to like it long term."

" Oh yeah, I loved the *sound* of his album.

I mean I can happily listen to it with my brain switched off... unlike a lot of this overprocessed, super clean crap which passes as dnb and house these days.

Certainly no worries there... and that's why I wanted to like it so much.

But, same here, I was interested in what he was doing ; listened to it for a bit with optimism; then realised it was sludge. "

" One thing I'll say though is that I hear a lot of people going on about how original Burials sound is etc... I can only assume these people have never listened to any ambient music before. "

" Can everyone stop saying that this is “a grower” !? This is the most uneventful, over-hyped piece of shit we’ve heard all year. If you’re after an album that sounds like the mating calls between a group of libido-less whales, then run and smash open your little sister’s piggy bank. It’s boring, gawky 2-step with some token reggae samples and some crackles. " ( Vice review... lmao. And people complain about the reviews on boomkat ! ).

" Got to be honest.

I really liked the * sound * of his last album - but I think his music's the audio equivalent of being force fed valium at an old people's home.

It's just dreary nothing... it's so boring, they played one of his tunes on mary anne hobbs the other week, and I got this sudden urge to start cutting myself. "

" I'd rather be cutting myself than enjoying that dreary, slow motion non-music.

You'd have to be the dullest person in east anglia to enjoy that. "

" The tunes generate this great atmosphere, but in terms of content theres nothing there. "

" You can listen to it and get into it, but you sort of have to forget that guys like Johnny Hammond, Gil Scot-Heron, James Brown, etc. exist. "

he says what he needs to say in about 3 minutes in most of his songs. glad most of them are under that. any more and it woul just be overkill.

I've only listened to it once.

Never been entirely positive on Burial, and for me a lot of this album feels incomplete or half-formed- as if its hinting at something rather than managing to achieve it. But then, that's the ambience/atmosphere of the music. Certainly does have a unique atmosphere, feels a lot lighter and more ambient than the first album.

Etched Headplate I think is good, again sounds like the sketch for a great 2 step tune (I suppose this insubstantiality of form is that 'music that you remember as you leave a club' thing he talks about in the interviews) but the vocal is killer and the submerged bassline works.

I like the little 'underground' vocal sample in the penultimate track, and the ed+op/bad company style bassline section. But for most of the album I can't really see the UK underground connection, it seems more connected sonically to European ambient/minimal stuff.

Two absolute standouts for me are Ghost Hardware (which I already knew about) and Archangel. Archangel is in my opinion the best thing Burial's done and probably the tune of the year. The bit when the strings kick in for the first time behind the vocal gave me one of the only spinechilling moments of the whole album. Amazing tune, nobody else could make it.

Will give it more detailed listening over the week.

listened a couple of times now. first thoughts, nice album. i'm struggling to see where the massive excitement stems from though.

i mean it was good, but not that good. the way people were talking i was expecting something akin to the second coming of christ.

definitely some good tunes though.

I do find the hype around the album a bit off putting. If anything it made me listen to the album with my back up.

definitely man. i kept waiting for the revolutionary life changing experience to occur. in reality all i kept thinking the whole way through was either:

1. Mmmm, this sounds quite nice
or
2. Mmmm, this is a bit bland

I disagree. I think it is wonderful. Turly remarkable. It's music that makes me feel alive. It moves me. It inspires me.

Hardly any music, let alone dubstep, is doing that to me right now...

The hype is deserved.

Etched Headplate, Untrue and Archangel are the standouts I think.

x2 really. I need to listen again but all the way through my last sitting i just had the thought of all the crap that was gonna be writen about it. It's a shame really cos it is a good album and i shouldn't let what other people say effect my own opinion about it. I just cant help it. I become very sceptical when so much praise is loaded on to someithing.

Why do you get sceptical because something recevies praise?

Does that mean you dislike something simply because it's well received? IMO, those aren't legitimate grounds...

Yeah but this wasn't well received was it, it was hailed as the best thing since sliced burial. Before anybody had even heard it.

That's a good point. My point was more raised at Metalbox though.

I personally think Burial deserves the hype.

Whether or not he deserves the hype, for people who are wary of hype or even for those who succumb to it, it can be counteractive. In either case you end up judging the album against the hype.

This is the problem for me with getting into music to the extent where you carry around all this intellectual baggage before you've even listened to something. I always like it when you're first getting into something and you judge it more on its immediate effect (b2b on drugs).

Nah man, McDonalds and UK are too short for me...have to reach for the rewind each time I play it to make it feel like a longer track

I don't really agree but only because the length of a piece of music has no influence over how much my ears like the sound of it. In McDonalds and UK both remind me of Squarepusher tunes such as Tommib / Tommib Help Buss which are also quite short (and also some of my fav pieces of music of all time). It doesn't take away from the appeal for me though. To each their own :)
