Yeah ive just finished watching it and i can't recall one moment when he looked even slightly phased. The man is a complete warrior.Victor Liechtenstein wrote:I saw it live!
Over the net no less. For free!
Calzaghe was awesome. Owned the fight from Round 4 onwards. Just masterclass.
Once again i'll bet any money that he doesn't win sports personality of the year, despite being one of the top ten greatest Boxers of all time. He hasn't lost a fight for 17 years for fucks sake

I was watching the fight for the 5th time last night on HBO. From the 5th round on -- Calzaghe was in control. An absolutely brilliant fight. Now -- it wasnt the demolition that Calzaghe administered to Jeff Lacy, but a masterful fight nonetheless.Victor Liechtenstein wrote:Calzaghe was awesome. Owned the fight from Round 4 onwards. Kessler -- he did everything right and it wasnt enough. Technically, he fought the correct fight. If there's a rematch, the result will be the same. There are some fighters that just have your number.
Junior Jones>M.A. Barrera.
Shane Mosley>DeLaHoya.
Vernon Forrest>Shane Mosley.
Ivan Robinson>Arturo Gatti (who remembers those fights? whoa...)
We can add Calzaghe>Kessler to the list.
Now -- i live in America and in all reality, Calzaghe has no real reason to leave the island. He's getting 50000 people a fight. that would never happen in America. EVER. If you get 20000, that's a lot of people. Additionally, Hopkins isnt the draw you think he'd be @ the ticket counter. He's an experienced fighter that's lost 4 fights over a long career. I've seen three of the 4 losses on video. He got worked by Roy Jones Jr 14 years ago. The Jermain Taylor losses -- close fights -- each of them. I'm not sure Calzaghe will give him a pasting, but any fighter in the 168 - 175 weight range will have issues with the Welshman.Chunkie wrote:bernard hopkins has accepted the challenge on the proviso that the fight is in america
he'll get a pasting too!
Ok - he hasnt lost a fight in 17 years and he's to be commended for that, but he's not one of the 10 best boxers of all time. You could make the argument that he's not one of the 10 best boxers of this generation (30 years, give or take a couple).Victor Liechtenstein wrote:........despite being one of the top ten greatest Boxers of all time. -- I'm using 30 years (give or take a couple) because that when Ali's reign was in decline and SugarRay Leonard was just beginning. 30 years allows for other legendary boxers to be included on the list.
Now, here's the question you've gotta ask: Is Joe Calzaghe better than the following boxers: (no particular order)
01. Sugar Ray Leonard. (Sure, i said no particular order, but he's gotta be # 1. Look at the next three guys on my list. Those three men were three of the most fierce human beings ever. Leonard beat them all.
Duran was known as "manos de piedra" or hands of stone. Duran is also considered by many to be the greatest lightweight ever.
Hearns -- he had two nicknames, "The Hitman" and "The Motor City Cobra". Nuff said.
Hagler -- He was a wolverine. And a southpaw with a meanstreak.
02. Roberto Duran.
03. Thomas Hearns.
04. Marvin Hagler.
05. Pernell Whitaker.
06. Lennox Lewis.
07. Roy Jones Jr. You can say what you want about his losses to Tarver and Glen Johnson, but before those losses -- he was untouchable. I read somewhere that he's beaten 17 former or current champions. One of his former opponents, Mike McCallum, is already in the boxing Hall of Fame. Three other opponents (James Toney, Bernard Hopkins and Vinny Pazienza) will eventually get the call to placed among the boxing elite.
08. Bernard Hopkins.
09. Evander Holyfield.
10. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The answer has to be "no".
***********************
As impressive as Calzaghe was, the fight to watch on saturday night was the super featherweight clash between Rocky Juarez and JM Marquez. An accidental headbutt opened a gash over the left eye of Juarez. Marquez proceeded to beat Juarez to a pulp. Pinpoint jabs. Vicious body shots. Dominance.
The Marquez / Pacquaio rematch has to happen. SERIOUSLY !

PBF is too skilled. Too fast. Too good.
Interesting post about the greatest of all time Mr Nice shall try and reply at some point bit busy to piece together a rational argument right now. Your boxing knowledge is exceptional though i must say.

See -- that's just it. How will Hatton deal with the speed of Mayweather?Baron_von_Carlton wrote:![]()
Hatton will take him out with a series of paralysing body shots. Probably in the eighth round. Bring it on can't fricken wait. Been looking forward to this fight for time.
There hasnt been a boxer with that sort of hand speed since Sugar Ray Leonard.
The difference between Leonard and Mayweather -- PBF is much more cautious / defensive minded. Mayweather will throw a punch then step away. If he sees that you're not throwing punches, he will throw punches in bunches -- e.g. Mayweather v Gatti. Gaatti was an easy targer after the second round. Hatton isnt the brawler Gatti is, but at times, he can be as reckless.
Thanks -- but the post wasnt about who's the greatest of all time. The post was a response to a previous post regarding Joe Calzaghe. Someone said he's the greatest of all time and i said that he wasnt even one of the 10 best of this generation (let's say -- about 25 years).Baron_von_Carlton wrote:Interesting post about the greatest of all time Mr Nice shall try and reply at some point bit busy to piece together a rational argument right now. Here were the 10 fighters of this generation that i said were better than Calzaghe.
01. Sugar Ray Leonard.
02. Roberto Duran.
03. Thomas Hearns.
04. Marvin Hagler.
05. Pernell Whitaker.
06. Lennox Lewis.
07. Roy Jones Jr.
08. Bernard Hopkins.
09. Evander Holyfield.
10. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Here's another 10 fighters (this generation - no order at all, that are better than Calzaghe.)
11. Oscar De La Hoya
12. Aaron Pryor
13. Alexis Arguello
14. Julio Cesar Chavez
15. Marco Antonio Barrera
16. Shane Mosley (he beat Oscar DeLa Hoya twice.)
17. Larry Holmes (remember, it's 25 years, give or take a couple.)
18. George Foreman. I know many of you are saying, "Joe, what are you doing? He was from the 60's and 70's.....and, you'd be correct in saying that. Does anyone remember his comeback? Does anyone remember his KO of Michael Moorer to win the heavyweight title? Does anyone own one of his grills? He makes the list.
19. Erik Morales
20. Mike Tyson. From the time he turned pro, until Feb. 11, 1990 (the Buster Douglas fight), there has never been anything (before or since) like Mike Tyson.
joe the encyclopedia.
i thought i knew alot about boxing, but your recollections are spectacular.
i was rooting HARD for kessler to pull it out.
calzaghe is an intelligent experienced fighter, and i think kessler showed his lack of experience. i mean hell, his corner didnt even have an enswell...whats up with that.also calzaghes ability to adapt to his opponent is pretty awesome, whereas kessler looked almost robot like sticking with a very similar un affective stlye the entire fight.
hatton is going to get slaughtered.
i dont like pretty boy, but i respect his skills...and he is an amazingly skilled fighter.

I was also looking for Kessler to win. The Dane ran into a Welsh buzzsaw. Plain and simple. Remember what i said in my original post:Marsyas wrote:i was rooting HARD for kessler to pull it out.

Kessler fought the right fight -- it wasnt working. It can't work.joenice wrote:Kessler -- he did everything right and it wasnt enough. Technically, he fought the correct fight. If there's a rematch, the result will be the same. There are some fighters that just have your number.
This fight should be an easy PBF victory especially @ 147. Hatton is moving up from 140. PBF is coming from 154. PBF won't KO Hatton, but it will be a decisive win. Expect final scores of the fight to be 118-110...117-111 (10 rounds to 2, or 9 rounds to 3).Marsyas wrote:hatton is going to get slaughtered.
