During their performance on Top of the Pops in the early 90s they played a game of chess on stage

Two people: One does resonance, the other does cutoff.

On the real, I'm thinking that they pre sequence all their stuff and do the knobs live? Anyone?

that is what I would do

edit: actually...

I'd have about 150 different tracks all sequenced together and mute them in and out (like an old school dub producer would do)

and then twist knobs

The better bands put on a bit of a show, dancers, video walls etc, because there is fuck all to watch actually going on with the musicians.

Fischerspooner, as much as the music is kinda meh, put on a fucking excellent show.

As do the Prodigy.

Best live dance act imo would be Faithless, who do actually play their shit.

yeah, but they lip sync and the basically "perform" from cd. its a pop concert and nothing more.

there's relatively few artists out there that actually perform a real live p.a. actually sequencing things on the go and creating music on the fly.

Orbital.

When they get back together for a reunion tour (and this is a dead cert in my opinion) you all MUST see them.

Incredible stuff. They properly do it live. No messing about. Live version of Halcyon is ridiculous. You can hear it on the recent Glastonbury Live compilation.

well there's that story of how daft punk don't even go to their gigs and just hire people to be there for them. google that.

also, the benefit of being two is that they can get booked for their full fee whilst only one of the has to be there so they can play at two different places on the same night. there's stories about this as well.

i think a problem in the question however is the viewing artists like this as bands. they aren't. applying a rock framework to it isn't productive.
