Thoughts on promo's

Post by Jubz » Thu Apr 20, 2006 5:12 pm

Just wondered what everyone's thoughts on promo's are, are they worth it? should you just wait til full release?

Dunno, are you bothered about artwork on your records? Personally I'm not fussed, if it's there I'll pick it up.

I certainly don't think there's any kudos in getting a promo therefore having the tune on 12" before other people, although it is kinda nice if something promos just before a gig or whatever.

Personally i have a fair share of white labels from my techno days but they always seemed to get a full release a month later so i then started waiting a bit longer for the full release just to have the whole artwork and what not just think it makes the record look a bit nicer (makes no difference to the music though).

But with dubstep (i just brought this up in the releases forum) i missed the Skream - Monsoon/I remix promo but it seems to be a while and now im wondering when thats actualey getting a full tempa release so i made sure i snapped up those mystikz bits on soul jazz i guess if they get a full release i could buy them again??

Its like you read my mind mate Ive been sitting agonising over whether to click buy on those soul jazz numbers! Its a tough one, the only thing that makes me want the whites is the fear that they might not make it to full release. But obviously no artwork, which I personally do generally care about (again it was tough with the soul jazz cos the rough stamped titles on the white looks as good as most artwork anyway!). Bollocks to kudos, come 10 years and my dmz collection is sitting there in all its identically labelled multicoloured glory ill be pissed off if theres a white in there (other than the first two of course). But thats me being a geeky one.

Im intrigued, whats do you feel Jubscars?

I think the whole promo culture can be damaging to a scene. Tunes getting rinsed out before full release. It's been happening for so long in the DnB scene.

I'm actually childish enough to get a little exited over the "exclusivity" of a promo, but I guess that just comes from being relatively new to this vinyl thing. That doesn't mean I would buy just any tune, just because it's on a promo.

Mainly, I'm with jackquinox and elgato on this one - if there's a tune available that I really want, I wouldn't take any chances. Artwork or no artwork. But with a full release, you obviously get more for your money.

I clicked buy! haha  also bought N-Type and lukeenvoy promo's. Fuck the kudos though only gonna be playing em to myself just want as many tunes as quick as possible, standard  . Love the music and I need it, im greedy I guess. No artwork is a loss, dont really want an all white collection, but I dont really want to buy the same records twice :? .

Yeah i fell at the first hurdle and purchased both of the mystikz promos on soul jazz dont want to risk it and if they do come out offically labeled and what not i can always sell them on e-bay and re purchase them im sure they will sell.

I agree the whole promo collection in drum and bass has had the effect of people saying those fabelled words "yeah had that tune a few months man" your heart sinks a little cause you know your special ammunition is not as powerful as previously hoped but a great record is a great record at the end of the day.

Hummm... I don't care if a vinyl is a white label promo or a full release... Serious... And if the track isn't released in the future? So... Better to get a promo before it's gone... It's music that matters anyway... What do you think?

Don't know really. I think i prefere full releases on LPs or EPs and don't bother on 12"s.

for me it's all about the music so artwork makes little difference. it's not as if dubstep 12s are known for the graphics.

the retails do make things a little easier to organise though.

Fair play, each to their own.

On a related note, what do people feel about someone selling promos on ebay for fat profits?

^Not really on imo but nothing to get preachy about. I ordered to 2 dmz white labels today, but if the proper relases look tasty i might well buy them and sell the promos on ebay, and maybe inadvertently make a proftit, where does that leave me? Guess if i make a fiver ill just buy some other dubstep 12" with it anyway!

Yeh man. Nah i wasnt looking to launch into a sermon i was just intrigued as to how people felt about it. Just seemed a bit cynical that the moment they dropped they were up on ebay and raking in the bids! But fuck it thats a philosophical minefield so allow that
