Toasty- On Something

Post by utopian » Fri Dec 14, 2007 1:12 pm

I like the way this track reminds me of jungle. At some point, it actually feels slightly like a jungle track.

Unsurprising he should come out with something so good, from the person who made 'The Knowledge', one of the best dubsteppy tracks ever made.

It's the 15th track on the above.

I was thinking the other day that Toasty makes the closest thing to jungle in dubstep... Skinny for example sounds like that GLR style jungle with the big simple sub line and ambient synths.

NO WAY!

You wanna hear jungle dubstep... Check out the new track up on Arorahs myspace

http://www.myspace.com/arorahvocals

called 'around the clock' - by cluekid (reminds me of the old good looking record sound)

Cluekid is bringing back the jungle vibes! - seriously heard a few new bits buy him resently and feel in love with the jungle sounds hes got going on.

On something by toasy is an amazning tune - but in my opinion is more dark - garagey vibe

LOVE & BASS!

Yes way

Really liking the tunes like this that have been coming through, Sully's got a few like that too, Formula too (and proper old skool hardcore dark too), Daddy Ruff (but then he's an old junglist, so fair play). Early jungle's got pretty similar tempo, Elemental's been incorporating some into his sets I hear.

Been working on a few bits myself in that direction, love working on breaks.

Back on topic, yeah Toasty is the hugeness - all about the all-Toasty Threnody mix if you can nab it off Subfm.
Hmm....

exactly.

really not feeling tune after tune being built around big drops and then 32 bars later right on cue for the predictable massive, a large drop out.

most of these dnb'ish tunes coming through are formulaic. there's nothing wrong with taking 3 minutes to just build a tune and keep building it. this stop start stop drop out start thing drives me nuts.
listen to horsepower. no drops, just 6 minutes of one vibe that builds and builds.

well drum n bass just like dubstep has it's good and it's bad. As you know, it's just a matter of how much you look.

I think it's more junglish stuff than dnbish (know it's splitting hairs to some but there's a world of difference to my mind) that's being referred to. There's plenty of old jungle tunes that are way closer to the vibe of Horsepower, people were a bit more flexible in their arrangements and it wasn't quite as predictable as it is now, more little ebbs and flows throughout the track. Some of the old Undercover Agent tunes were like this - Dubplate Circles and Dangerous to name two.

You probably know this anyway Seck, so sorry if that's patronizing in any way.

agreed. i just don't like predictability being the focus.

not trying to sidetrack the thread too much though...on something is a deep tune. especially the main melody. out to damo of course.

Yeah On Something is another amazing tune in an increasing list of amazing tunes from Toasty Boy. My fav so far has to be Live life feel it but On Something has got a real interesting eerie/funky vibe going on... aptly named.

I've just listened again, and it's mainly the breakdown in the middle and just after that feels jungley. Like really early jungle, 1992 maybe, when you had 4-4s and breakbeats together.

Think that was a golden era in it's own way. Love those points in genres where there's no formula.
