.. psychedelic hip-hop?

Post by +torment+ » Thu Dec 13, 2007 6:51 am

This could be a shot in the dark, but could be worthwhile as a thread topic either way.

Er, i'm just trying to remember the name of a 90's hip-hop duo that may fall under the style - alternative / grungey / psychedelic hip-hop of that time. A bit vague i know, but for anyone that was into similar sounds then, feel free to list or recommend any groups or names that were around then. Maybe the name will come up. Maybe. Fire away.

Company Flow?

You'd probably be a fan of Doctor Octagon, El-p, Cannibal Ox and the like.

eh no worries.

It was NEW KINGDOM. I was just trying to remember the name, diggin in the crates so to speak.

Yep, Cannibal Ox, big DALEK fan here. I dont' think much of the "psychedelic hip-hop" tag per se, but i could see how some groups might fit with that as well - the term wasn't my creation haha. "grungey" hip-hop, noisey, what have you. Techno Animal. All good.

and yeah, got back into El-P recently, including the Alec Empire stuff.

have a look for some 90's "DJ Screw" tapes on the net. Way more trippy than Co Flow/ Def Jux

Yep New Kingdom were pretty cool. Justin Warfield did an acid-themed hip hop album in the 90's and I think sang the lyrics on Bug Powder Dust by Bomb the Bass.
Hmm....
