I would totally appreciate some sound advice!

Right, after 7 years of waiting for breakbeat to man-the-fuck-up and grow some balls, suddenly, Dubstep reared its ugly head and i've finally decided to start producing.

So... (And this is pretty basic), i've got absolutely no idea what sequencer to go for. Can anyone offer a bit of advice as what to do please. Personally i'm thinking of getting pro tools (M-Powered 7 i, with the Command 8 mixing desk), thinking that i'll never have to change to something else in the future.

So, what are you lot using and why.

p.s. Bring on the newbie abuse!!!

--- dunno about pro tools - don't really matter what you use as long as you learn how to use it inside out - personally id reccommend Logic but thats what Im using so ...

Hey bro its just a personal thing really, you gotta try some shit out to see what clicks, or what is most intuative for you...

Programs like Renoise, Reason, Fruity Loops 7, Ableton you can try demo's for free... I dig FL7 but thats just me, and i found it very easy to get into when just getting my head around computer music yet i'm still learning new things to do with it a few years down the track..

Just find your way of doing things that works, then keep pushing outside the box... any of these kinda programs will work, just gotta find one that helps you get sounds from your head out for everyone else to hear

Dont spend any money at all on anything, until you have tried all the free demos of software.

You should be trying to get things working for at least 6 months before laying down any cash

HAMMER all the main internet forums and soak up all the knowledge. Ask questions, experiment and make music.

If you still think it is for you, spend some money.

All music production software does BASICALLY the same thing, so it doesnt really matter which one you choose. There are advantages to each, but get the one that you like best.

Once you learn it inside out, you will easily be able to migrate to another bit of software if you want to.

get pro tools if you are using an external synth and midi and anyother external plugins you may have or use, because thats what the program is for. reason, fls and such alike a perfect for strting out as is logic, the beuaty of logic beung it has plusses from both the reason side and the pro tools side. ableton is another deep on with many many features. check therir website for video, or do as i personally choose and run ableton reason and logic together

i think you're diving in head first

try the demos (if available)

also, i'd recommend logic or reason purely on the basis that they are both user friendly and you can 'make music out the box'

pro tools is balls unless you've got synth plug-ins/hardware to run with it

also, forget trying to buy something forever... its a fallacy - you will develop your style and will need more/different things as time goes by

get something that is good enough to take you from a to b and can be expanded to get you to c

search the sequencer threads for pros/cons of each, see what suits and start the demos rolling

also - i know nothing about is but renoise gets a lot of praise on here and is cheap as chips

I started playing about with production after djing for years and i have to say, if your on a mac, get logic 8. Its so simple and amazing and the results you can get at a basic level of producing (like im at!) are really good.
Also loads of instruments come with it. That gets my vote!

unless you've got a background in engineering, i can't recommend pro tools as a writing environment-- especially if you're gonna be writing synth- and sample-based music, get something that acutally comes with good synths and samplers up front, right?

logic, reason, fl7, ableton. yeah that's right-- i gots no problemz w/ fruity loops. do what'cha gotta do.

if you're on mac-- go logic, trust me.

Ahhh... You boys are alright! And there i was expecting an American History X shower-scene-rape-down of abuse!!!

Thanx for some decent advice. As some of you have mentioned- Got no hardware, so the Pro Tools option does sound a little off the mark. - Obviously don't have a background in engineering - I would love to go the whole Logic route but pc only unfortunately. I've briefly flirted with Ableton and suggested this to a few D&B musos i know but they stared at me like a dog that had just been shown a fuckin' card trick!

I'm getting a definite Reason vibe offa here, and hadn't considered getting a ''free'' copy first up either.

Admittedly you're not entirely wrong, some good shit happened, but even then the likes of Search and Destroy saw sense and migrated on a full on Dubstep tang!!!

if ur pc only then get cubase and if u want to run reason then u can slave it and its really simple mate... trus cubase is heavy
