oh, and "black music is reggae, not garage"? get real. what the fuck has colour got to do with music? and where did garage come from? country and western?

What I was saying is that I see more of what is considered black music (love or loathe the term) in dubstep than in drum and bass.

The feel of space, the use of some techniques which were pioneered in dub music like reverb, delays and echoes- these are far more prominent or obvious in dubstep than in drum and bass.

Take techy drum and bass like Noisia for instance. You could hardly call that black music. I'm saying that if people call dub music black music (you obviously don't like the term black music), then I think dubstep is closer to black music than drum and bass is, because I think dubstep is closer to dub than drum and bass is.

Now, I'm not saying drum and bass or dubstep are black music. I'm saying that 1Xtra seem to consider drum and bass to be black music as they have it on their station with the slogan 'the home of new black music'. And I'm saying that if they think drum and bass is black music, then dubstep is.

I'm actually with you on the fact that the term just provokes an awkward debate and brings nothing towards the acknowledgement of music as something universal.

Hope you understand what I'm getting at.

thats exactly what im saying - colour had nothing to do with music - !!

but if we are speaking about the ORIGINS - i do not consider garage to be from 'black' origins but i do consider reggae to be from 'black' origins

I find it quite funny in a way though because a lot of the more obvious dubby tunes are made my middle-class white folks. It amused me when a lot of the grime tunes from a few years back seemed to feature quite a lot of very white, MOR tunes from the eighties - as cultural appropriation goes, sampling dub is seen as giving it an authentic edge where there is none, and from the grime angle anything is seen as fair game (as it was in hip-hop with sampling Slayer, Mr Mister, and David Bowie).

So in a way if white kids wish to be seen as a bit more street and "real" (whatever the fuck that means), they'd probably be better off sampling Cutting Crew

as someone said b4 its just the BBC trying to be cool and failing miserably. i think its embarrassing everytime i hear the HOME OF BLACK MUSIC .. silly. As deci said - since day pioneers have been both black and white.

when i look at stations like peoples fm in leeds, they play bak to bak proper old skool reggae and dancehall, 24/7 run by sound boys.

They always talking about unity and togetherness no need for racial discriminations

If 1extra ran on the same format then it would be acceptable to say that it was a home of black music, but they dont so i actually thinks its bad taste tbh

But regardless of the fact she plays a lot of dubstep, it isn't a dedicated dubstep show. If Mary decided there wasn't much dubstep she wanted to play any given week, she wouldn't have to.

Whereas a dedicated dubstep show would have to play dubstep. This is the difference.

I am glad there is dubstep on Radio 1.

the black music tagline has always seemed pretty sketch, always thought it was for lack of a better term. but a 'black only' (which means fuck all anyway) policy is so backwards its unbelievable. have no love for a station that's run like that.

most interesting thing to come up here tho is the digital switchover. i would have thought it would free up shitloads of frequency space, i think police (n the rest of the services) radio use digital now too...

I don't know any one who listens to 1xtra, its pretty awful, also, the whole hing with haaving to listen on the computer or tv as i dont have a digital tuner.
1xtra seems to think that its all about hip hop aswell, pop "black" music.
I wonder how music will fair if/when pirate dies as this has for me been a big thing in my growing up and musical development. For me, undreground music in london has been built on pirates.

What a load of shite. Reminding us of the struggles what? This is 2008 and colour has very little to do with music nowadays. On the one hand we want to beat racism and on the other we want to remind people of the struggles? Those two dont mix.
