go into bios set cd-dvd drive to top of the boot order
put the knoppix cd in the drive, when u get into this see if the drives appear on the desktop presented, if not quite likely hardware failure
would they appear if they're ntfs? he's using windows so they probably will be...

how many individual hard drives have you got? if windows isn't starting then it's the master one with the problem, but if you've got data on other drives you'll be able to get it off just by bunging them in another pc

the master drive does sound like it's what's technically referred to as 'knackered', though.

yes

knoppix live cd is one of the best recovery options out there, very useful!

The other day at work we had a hosed laptop hard drive, recovery console and chkdsk wouldnt work, knoppix didn't see it, managed to get stuff off it though using one of these gizmos: http://tekgems.com/Products/kl-usb-sata-ide-25-35.htm

very neat! :)

ok after a while of trying many different solutions, none have worked, and i've come to the conclusion that my hard drive is effled. my brother has had a good look at it too and he knows a fair bit about PCs. anyhow, looks like data recovery is the next option

any ideas how much this costs? don't really want to pay more than £100 for getting the data off...

thanks for all the help earlier on in the thread as well

hmm okay i just googled a couple of companies, phoned up the first 3, they all said something in the realm of £200 mininum, with no recovery-no fee basis.

i'm sure a friend of mine got data back on a hard drive for something like £120, so have a good look around, im fairly sure you could get it done for under £200 at least.

dunno where you live but might be worth trying local computer places instead of internet companies that will collect it, they'll always cost a lot more.

hope this helps

thing about these data recovery places is a lot of their initial work is using freeware (or at least shareware) utilities that you can get yourself

problem is i don't know any of their names, and since it's big money business typing 'data recovery' into google gets you a load of results that won't really help

try these before you shell out any cash:

ez, this happened to me too
if you got any friends with a pc this is what i did:
set your corrupt hard drive to a slave, and connect power / ide cables from a separate pc to your hdd. when you turn on that computer it should now read your corrupt hdd as a slave hdd, and you can then treat it like any other hdd from my computer and just drag/drop files to and from.
if you have any questions just ask.

before you do that, or buy a new hdd, perhaps try one quick thing
don't know how familiar you are with the inyards of computers, but i remember having this problem years ago, simply took out the bios battery on the motherboard for like 10 minutes stuck it back in and turned the computer on. it looks like a big watch battery. no warranty here so don't try it if you don't really know what you're doing in there.
anyway, first idea should get you on your way.

ok cheers once again for the help

installed a new HD in the PC with windows etc, and i've used a data recovery program to show all the data that's left on the old HD, and its quite good - says it can get 90gb out of the 112. so it's just a case of buying the program so i can actually retreive that data lol

big up you lot

i had exactly this same problem, and i recovered quite a lot of files, but seriously be prepared for the worst because a lot of the music of my own that i recovered was really corrupted.

corrupted in the sense that it would be half my music, half mashed up with mf doom mp3s :? i don't know how it did it, but it fucked up all of my old music!

not all of my files were fucked, but enough that i wouldn't call those data recovery programs reliable.

http://www.runtime.org/

program is called ' GET DATA BACK '

i used the NFTS version. costs like 40 quid for the ability to copy those retreived files. seems to do a really thorough job of it as well, comes up with this giant tantalising list of the files that were on the hard drive to make you buy the program lol
