first dubstep track me and a mate made was alright. got a few downloads. then a friend sang over it and brought it to life. http://files.filefront.com/Leave+The+Ar ... einfo.html now its a song thats had 500+ downloads and getting a release. it all depends on the track/singer/lyrics/sample. it either works or it dont.detuneproductions wrote:Yes but only if it adds to or glues together the track. Putting vocals in just because it is another instrument, rather than creating the vocal to give more dynamics to the track, can detract from the track.metalboxproducts wrote:Isn't the voice just another instrement?
OMFG thats a mean trackJD wrote: first dubstep track me and a mate made was alright. got a few downloads. then a friend sang over it and brought it to life. http://files.filefront.com/Leave+The+Ar ... einfo.html now its a song thats had 500+ downloads and getting a release. it all depends on the track/singer/lyrics/sample. it either works or it dont.

Anything humans make is humanized (just as it is natural).
Nothing should be arbitrarily ruled out but usually vocals, particularly by toasty-boys, MCs and divas, just add another ego to distract from the essential dubstep experience.
Voices aren't needed to evoke emotions but often push politics and ways to think acceptably.

yeah agree that a lot of dubstep lacks an element of fun and ends up as macho posturing, vocals aren't necessarily the way to do this but i love vocals just the same - if they're done right, which all too often isn't the case with other types of music, but there's not been very many vocal dubstep tunes that i've hated. and MC Dynamite has MCed over dubstep... can't remember what tune though, it was a while agoepithet wrote:Dunno about humanising but it needs lightening up and socially conscious vocals can do that. Too much dark type business. I'd like to hear Ms Dynamite over dubstep. As for the essential dubstep experience, i say fuck all that purist bullshit
and as mbp said earlier lilyliver by darkstar (and dead 2 me as well) are perfect examples of how vocal dubstep should be done

What about the Pinch album then
- CD release with vocals and instrumentals most of the tracks work both ways imo and all in all its just a quality piece of music.

Too right the first bit. Really enjoy the dubfun that Remedy makes and starting to resent grimey ugliness some people are flogging as ds.epithet wrote:Dunno about humanising but it needs lightening up and socially conscious vocals can do that. But as for purist bullshit comment, I demur.
There has to be something (essential) that differentiates something from other things. My ds experience of that is bigbass + dub + bpm which doesn't imply purity.
Someone I respect reckons ds is going thru the mad scramble to absorb everything like dnb did; heading in the same dark and ugly direction until the commercial pressure is taken off and producers can return to clarity and beauty.

I swear she did a track with Oris Jay, check the Oris / El-B mix on the breezeblockepithet wrote:Not MC dynamite Miss dynamiteeeeee, you know from sticky's BOO ? Pinchs vocal exploits on 'underwater dancehall' are pretty hit and miss if you ask me. Only ones worth mentioning are 'one blood' and 'get up'.

Vocal tunes, like non vocal tunes can be shit or amazing. I dont think it has anything to do with the fact it has vocals on, more to do with the fact that the producer is either good or crap. I like the fact that some producers are leaning away from just using reggae vocals as well, whilst I am a huge fan of a number of reggae vocal tracks I think producers could dig a lot deeper

I am not a fan of huge vocals, but I do like samples - If things can be done well, then it doesn't really matter what those things are.sted in
In reagards to my own taste in so far as what kind of mental journey I am undergoing - or what sort of stimulated mental visual journey you want peoples to experience - well - I like a dark abstract, or a psychadelic natural, or a childlike dreamscape, or a sepia tone timewarp, or an underwater alien craft..
Do I want Vegas as clueless barbie world - fuck no.

i mix drum n bass and i normally try to avoid the vocal tracks .
dont get me wrong alot of vocal tracks are done really well but they sometimes ruin the flow of things
i hear alot of dubstep with mcs on them not over the top actually in the track n i just dont like it 1 bit , i like mcs live at an event or radio show

Definatly not in the last third of the track..song should be working out for the mix..
Am I being formulaic..
I have some old D+B tunes that are fantastic EXCEPT for the fact that they are working these complex cymbal loops all the way through - they muddle any mix you try..I wouldn't cancel the cymbal loops entirely..but I would leave them in the body of the track..things that make me want to produce ..

Weird, I'd say that One Blood is the worst vocal on there by a country mile, mainly because the lyrics are really trite. I really like a lot of the others, although I sometimes think what'd be best would be an album of dubs, where bits of the vocal are cut in and out to leave a bit more space.epithet wrote:Not MC dynamite Miss dynamiteeeeee, you know from sticky's BOO ? Anyway, I find this sort of thread a bit weird, because "Does dubstep need X' rather than just "do you like X" or "would you like to hear more X" kind of implies that we're the cross-party commission on Humanity in Dubstep and we're going to put forward a white paper suggesting quotas and targets for the number of vocal tracks that labels should release, with the threat of fines for any label failing to comply. Rather than a bunch of people talking about what we do and do not like.

Personally, I'm finding a lot of tracks around and quite big that I don't connect with and might consider 'too mechanical', but I don't think that's so much about needing soul singers and live sax and double bass instead of synths and drum machines and stuff as it is about not having the sort of space / depth / energy / atmosphere / variety / fun / movement / whatever that I get off on. And there's a lot of stuff around that does have all that, so I'm not really complaining.
