Soul, Motown, Neo Soul etc

Post by boots manuva » Wed Feb 06, 2008 2:21 am

Listening to bits of Barrington Levy at the moment and while he normally rocks dancehall/reggae there's an element of soul in his ballads. Great stuff.

Seems like you have to buy compilations for the best motown as most stuff was originally released as singles.

So what floats ya boat?

My favourites are probably Sam & Dave, The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson,The Isley Brothers, Isaac Hayes, The Supremes, Roy Ayers and the Four Tops.
The usual ones mentioned really, they realeased so much classic material.

New stuff i like Amp Fiddler and Dwele

Interesting that you mention Barrington Levy. If you listen to old Jamaican music from the Rocksteady era, all the singers are trying to emulate the American soul singers. From what ive heard it didn't really find it's own identity till Ska was born.

Yep, with Levy I think his more straight up soulful stuff came through in the 80s/90s.

Thanks for all the recommendations, few I haven't heard. Currently listening to Musiq as I type this - one of my favourite modern soul singers.

Ska was actually prior to rocksteady..ska was heavily influenced by the early imported American R&B, although it might not be as obvious as the influence of the Impressions etc on Rocksteady.
