DMZ REPORT
I thought the bass sounded fine, but the mid/treble coming from the hung speakers at the back was a bit ragged and painful sometimes.
great night though..
funny seeing myself in one of the photos that's been posted with my "oh-my-god-that's-a-bassline" face (somewhere between joy and disbelief) on......

I'm ashamed to say thatI don't know them but i will ask around (to cover my ignorance!)Hazmonkey wrote:Those are some of the most highly respected sub's in the business: Nexo S2.
Big up for asking for feedback. Lets put it in context - it was a great sounding system overall, I'm comparing it with the best. However, to my ears it sounded like there was lots of clipping during Mala and Loe's set, somewhat beyond what you'd expect from a big deep reggae system. In contrast it was much quieter and a bit less deep (IMO) during Kode9's set, but with much less distortion. Skream seemed quite a bit cleaner but just as loud as DMZ. As a comparison, when Mala played Sheffield, in a slightly smaller room over a reggae system it was less distorted, and the sub bass seemed deeper with richer harmonics. Also, Iration Steppas' system is IMO louder and clearer than either with vastly richer sub-bass - still chest-rattling, still with some nice low-end sizzle and with the kind of low end you can go and live in, but without clipping.Hazmonkey wrote:To be fair, it is quite old technology and they have been getting a battering for many years. If you heard any squared off waves from clipping I would like to hear about it, as far as I know the gain structure was running a bit hot but well within its limits.please get back to me, all comments are welcome!
Just to set my comments in context, I noticed on the Faith forum that Simon Haggis from Whistlebump, who is a lover of loud bass and a bit of a system geek, thought the system was a bit rough, dirtier than the 3rd Base one.
I'm aware that I'm splitting hairs a bit here, so don't take this as being critical!

!
Ok fair dues, the fridge got raided so security was doing there job... So why were some people walking around with joints in their mouths or behind their ears which was pretty blatant and others were kicked out no questions?
If there gonna do a job, you gotta treat people the same cos this gets some people agro.. If it’s a no green policy that needs to apply to everyone.. Most security guards are just doing a job, these were complete stnuc...
Even so it didn't spoil my DMZ, everything else (apart from a few to many rewinds) was on fire as normal.. The only reason i mention this again is cos I’ve seen security guards really fuck nights up.. There's never been any trouble at dmz, but i can see if security act like this in future people will start to get vex'd.. Once some people get in this frame of mind its not just security they wanna fight but anyone around them... getting security to JUST do their job is no problem, speaking and treating you like a piece of shite is...
PEACE
I'll say it again tho... shouts to mala, loe, all dj's and everyone involved for putting on yet another wicked dmz.. see ya on the 8th July..
The point has been raised, hopefully things will be better next time. I should point out that the DMZ crowd are definately safe as, we want to keep you lovely people happy!Cogent wrote:

Where is this? Do you know what rig it is?Batfink wrote: It certainly didn't come near the exceptional Dissident system which i heard in the Black Swan at Subloaded 1.
Im surprised to hear all this talk about the rig, you guys are an unusually knowledgeable crowd and you have obviously sat in front of some major equipment. I have heard the Iration steppas rig in the Brixton Recreation center and yes, it sounds incredible, it is also about three times the size of ours (litteraly) and will naturaly produce a more effortlessly phat sound.
I have a few ideas I'm gonna try in an attempt to make it better for next time. I never get feedback, this is good for me, all comments are welcome!

about the security....
I can understand clubs where there are lots of heads getting mashed on pills and other class having heavy handed bouncers and attracting attention from the law like the fridge but putting all this effort into kicking out people blazing zutes seemed out of place and the result of a reactionary and innaccurate response, the security were by far the most aggressive poeple there and as said before seemed more likely to instigate a situation.
I do understand however that it's the council/police etc etc and not just mass management. I'll just keep it a bit more ninja stealth I suppose.

That's a fair point - it's huge (and has been tuned for a very long time). In Sheffield they usually play the Everyman Centre - which is about the size of a school hall, maybe a quarter the size of the Rec. It sounds like the whole universe is vibrating in there. http://blog.grievousangel.net/?p=172Hazmonkey wrote:I have heard the Iration steppas rig in the Brixton Recreation center and yes, it sounds incredible, it is also about three times the size of ours (litteraly) and will naturaly produce a more effortlessly phat sound.
You should still be proud of your rig though. Especially in the middle of the room, it had a lot of clarity, chest-caving power, and seismic depth. We're comparing it with some of the best systems in the world - not just Steppas but Body and Soul, Shelter, Plastic People etc. - and while your rig might not ultimately be quite as good as them, it's in the same ball park, and that's pretty good.
Big up for seeking feedback!

In terms of feedback, I wasnt at this dmz so can't say comparatively, but I know that the best systems Ive heard are
Dissident - a squat rig from Bristol, built by people who just love the party, they put on various warehouse/outdoor parties when they can, aside from doing hire out (such as the Subloaded already mentioned). An absolutely top bunch of lads, if you wanted to contact them about spec and such Im sure they'd be happy to talk to you... http://www.dissident-faction.co.uk/
Plastic People - Ive heard its Funktion One, I dont know for sure, but it is sooo good. But they have the massive advantage of the size and shape of the room, by setting up as they do in such a confined space, it is much easier to create the immersive sound that they do
