Interested In Starting My Own Night....
Okay i may have mentioned this before, its a goal i have this year to start my own dubstep night here in Sydney & as im going to be going alone in this im saving cash for this little investment of joy. So could anyone who has promoted dubstep nights before please provide me with all the necessary information as ive never done anything like this. Ive slowly been networking here, meeting people, dj's, promoters & all that but i thought i'd ask this forum for anyone new information which i may not know.
What do i need to get going? Let loose with your replys yeah!

Wicked mate! I guess the hardest thing in Sydney is the venues.. speak to Farj from GP as he as been running things there from day one and will be well up for give you advice on how to approach them!saba wrote:Okay i may have mentioned this before, its a goal i have this year to start my own dubstep night here in Sydney & as im going to be going alone in this im saving cash for this little investment of joy. one thing i think i missing is people playing between cities in Australia in general though. There is a strong focus on getting uk acts over there which is great but at the same time... what about getting someone like 'Flippo' up to Sydney for a gig.. also... ac23, spherix... have they play along side the void or southernsteppa djs yet?
just hit them up on myspace..
soundsystem wise... the void nights use the Hijack rig... best in Sydney if you ask me. And Paul is great at tuning it for dubstep!
Good luck

Yeah i'll definitely start off with local acts first & use Hijak in an instance. Ive already had chats to Victim & Kodama about it, so as you said locating a good venue that would take the sound & that is easily accessible is the hardest thing right now! Im gonna take my time & try to ask as many questions, learn as much as i can before i dive in deep, cheers Ninja!

Save up a bit of dollar 1st, coz you're gonna need it for your flyers, DJs, venue, soundsystem etc. You never know by the end of the 1st event you might have enough to pay for all this if it's a success and your overheads weren't too much in the 1st place but it's much better to prepare for the worst and have the cash ready. Local artists as Ninja said is the best way to go for the 1st few until you have enough cash in the kitty to go big.
Good luck man
Good luck man
Yeah it's all about involving DJs from a few different crews so you can be more certain of getting a reasonable turn out... word of mouth reaching more people.
I don't know how much there's already going on in Sydney, but in Wellington most of the people repping dubstep play it for the love, $$ a bonus but most people are happy to chip in to just get more exposure for the music... (probably a bit different if it's your main source of income tho).
good luck with your night bro! And good luck for dealing with club owners - most of the ones I've dealt with are pretty notoriously disorganised and or scared of the sound
(Not all though!)

Ninja has some great ideas there mate, there has been talk of getting the melb heads up north and vice versa for a while. I head down to Melbs regulary for gigs and the GP guys are doing a show down there soon. But we need to get the melb lads up here. Im good mates with Flippo, Spherix and Cammo so give me a buzz if you want there deets.
Id be happy to help you out any way I can mate, i have put on alot of gigs myself over the years so just holla!

dont throw ur money away on this shit music..
nah just kidding.
find a club that u can do the party at.
i have been very lucky as a club approached me to do a night.
spend lots of money on promo, get local street presses involved.
create as much hype as u possibly can.
go postering 3 or 4 times a week, get cd's done up so u can give em
to people when ur out and be like hey this is dubstep if u like it come to my night.
have a budget and know exactly what u are spending on everything, run it like a buisness, work out what u can afford to loose.
and if u are lucky nuff people will show up, the vibes will be sick and people will be talking about it for weeks.
