Using original Multi track audio

I've come across quite a few Multi track masters in the past few days, that is to say the complete seperated audio tracks for songs by Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder etc . I've seen quite a bit of discussion on other forums as to the legality of these tracks when used individually and not put together as the original song. and was wondering if anyone here could shed light on whether it is completely illegal or not.

I'd love to do some remixes of this stuff, especially with the vocals, but don't want to end up getting nailed for it. Do you think this is how some of the bigger name producers get their hands on individual tracks, like Alcia for example. Can't see Mala having the money to shell out for the audio to remix that....

the way I'd approach this is give the original artist credit by listing the track like this

Artist_-_songname_-_(joe's remix)

dont try to sell the music

I think the main issue is how you actually got hold of these in the first place. If these are the original multi-tracks then some-one is likely to get into serious shit over it, such as losing there job and possibly a criminal record!

But if you got them fair and square, you will have to pay for using the audio, how much you pay will be down the record company that owns the rights to the original songs. But don't be surprised if you have to pay the majority of the royalties you make to said record company.

complitely and utterly illegal.

use a "pistol" allen snare, it´s illegal.

doesn´t mean you shouldn´t do it though.

if you aren´t getting any money made out of it, most likely the slap on the wrist will be "take them out from myspace" type of thing.

than again, they might come down hard and sue your ass.

but... not likely.

I was randomly looking for some Nirvana live bootlegs and came across the full multi tracks for four tunes of theirs. After my jaw hit the floor, I had a look about and saw there were quite a few other famous artists with multis knocking about. Tthey have been circulating for a while now but the Bohemian Rhapsody multi's for example were given to pro tools dealers to demo on their rigs for customers, thats how that one came about. The others I guess got leaked from in house producers and remixers when doing remastering or 5.1 packages. You're right, how I came about them may be questionable to some but worth it nonetheless.
