Si Begg reviews , thanks for yr help

Post by sibegg » Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:02 pm

If anyones interested these are my reviews for Knowledge mag (as u can see its a fair spread of styles in there) , thanks to everyone who hooked me up with the nasty tunes, sorry i couldnt get more of them in there

Scuba – A Mutual Antipathy LP – Hotflush

In a world where louder, faster and heavier are often considered the best, it’s good to hear someone prepared to lower their voice, rather than shout to get your attention. This album is so immersive you will disappear into it. I’ve got a full length mp3 of the whole thing mixed together, stuck it on my headphones in the studio and felt like I’d been abducted, coming out the other side blinking into the bright light. That’s not to say there aren’t some hefty dancefloor moments on this LP, but its all done with a real sense of musicality and sound that leaves you with a deep experience, snare rolls and sirens it aint. Not that I’m not partial to snare rolls and sirens (anyone who’s heard me play out will know that) its just nice to hear something with real substance for a change especially a full length LP.

Rico Tubbs – Gangsters – Menu Music

If you want to call it bassline house that’s all good but its pretty much speed garage at the end of the day and I’ve loved that sh*t from day one. However uncool it is or was, it always tears up the floors of any denomination. Now our man Rico has taken a bit of speed garage with all its rave influence stuffed in a bit of Switch and bit of breaks and what you get is some proper dancefloor destruction. This is a crackin EP especially Gangsters, the floor will love you for this one. I’m told there’s an album on the way, one word, where’s my promo copy hmmmm?

Skeetaz – Fogrequing EP – Spacebar Sentiments

If you want next level sh*t then get this EP. The production is flawlessly future proof the beats are funky and the grooves are deeper than a submarine. Seriously, I love this EP. “Fo” is like some kind of acid crunk groove , super funky fun, “Drama Quing” sucks you into a totally holographic headspace, Limbretimbre’s remix of “Fo” gives you something a bit heavier to bash some bins with whilst keeping a bit of the 80s cameo crunk from the original mix, then lastly you’ve got “Ogre” a tempo shifting glitch-hop oddessy. Great label, great EP.

Elemental – Blob / Sirens (Elemental 07 Re-Fix) – Runtime

God its nice to get something that’s so damn fresh. So many times I get tunes through that are not bad but just mighty derivative. This EP combines so many things I like in a completely fresh way, the A1 “Blob” is total Detroit step with a bit of broken beats bunged in for good measure. Infectious stabby basslines, funky broken breaks, its like Seiji and Juan Atkins hooking up for a dubstep workout. Totally bad. Scan to the B1 and Sirens (Elemental 07 Re-fix), by Elemental and 3D, sucks you in with lush choral cinematics before hitting you up sharp with a lovely roller that throbs along with an almost ravey feel, all dubbed out hoovers and skippy breaks. Basically if you don’t like this EP you aint got a pulse.

Lifecycle – Pulse / On the Vine – Ricochet

Right before you all start, yes there’s a remix by me on here, ok there it is, now before you all say, Si tell us about the remix, its re-definition of the breakbeat genre and its groundbreaking production techniques I say look I’m not here to blow my own trumpet ok? Now, on to the rest of the EP. Lifecycle (Geoff to his mum) does a tasty line in melodic deep intense breaks but my favorite moment here is “On the Vine” a deep synergy of electronica and tribal percussions, not like anything else out there right now, great stuff. Then on the digital package you also get the Ion Driver mix you lucky people, a lovely, dubby, glitchy electro work out. All in all a really well produced package.
