new track, with Arab vocals
Here's a 320 of it: http://andreas-krautwald.com/music/Adhan_dub.mp3
It's straight from Reason, so the mix is a bit rough…

word
I like this track. Its effective and the arab vocal is very nice.
The drums may be a bit weak but I don't think they need to be super punchy all the time. Not with this genre anyways. Is it available for download?

Thanks a lot.
I'm not trying to build massive bangers, I'm just trying to evoke a bit of dub in dubstep. That's why the bassline is a low, pulsing sub and the drums are fairly spacious and light.
That's the intent anyway. The result may vary, especially as I've got neither the studio nor the experience to really master the track in any way.
Please keep the comments coming, it's good to hear the track through other peoples ears / speakers …

i'm with you on this - there needs to be more variation in dubstep! but i agree a bit with the other posters, too. the percussion in this track needs to sit a bit higher in the mix - particularly when you've got that vocal sitting well out in front. I don't think the bassline needs to be emphasised, coz on a big system that's going to sit very happily (you don't need to choke everyone with sub-bass weight, guys!)acetone wrote:I'm not trying to build massive bangers, I'm just trying to evoke a bit of dub in dubstep. if it were me, i'd give the snare a bit more 'snap' - push up the mids and highs on it, and maybe add a short reverb to it. the hats i'd leave at the same level (personal preference more than anything) and i'd give the kick a boost of less than 1db below 200Hz.
Beyond that, there's some killer ideas in that. There's a fantastic tension to the intro, and the vocal channels a whole bunch of ideas I'm currently playing with (it's nice to know that other people are moving the same way!) Breaking away from the dubstep formula might not endear you to the more bogan elements in the main forum (what the fuck kind of topic was 'What kind of food do dubsteppas eat', fer fucks?) but i'm looking forward to your ideas!
Thanks a lot prismatic7 for the feedback, I'm looking forward to hearing what you're working on.
I'll have a go at touching up the snares, give them some SNAP! and beef up the kicks a bit and see how it works out. I'll post the follow up here in this thread.
I've uploaded a .zip for those of you who are having problems downloading the mp3. Get it here:

I had a go at fixing the track using prismatic7 and narcossists suggestions, and I think it's a definite improvement. I've upped the new version but left the old links above so you can compare the two versions.
Here's version two:

And here's a zipped one for the download impaired:

yes! you've got much better separation between sub and kick now, acetone. that little bit extra on the snare pops it out of the mix, too, adds to the tension - i really dig the vibe you've got running, that kind of futuristic, spacious thing. Like you said, it's not a banger but definitely a heavyweight tune...

I really love the tune, particularly the vocals. The drums still don't sound perfect to me, but yeah, they've improved.
I'd love to know what machine you used for the drums. For some reason, the sound reminds me of the Boss DR-660. My bandmate used to program drums for his doom/metal/hardcore songs with that thing. Sounded hilarious.
cheers

I actually like this. Making tunes like this, I would be aiming more for like a soundtrack, film score, videogame market. This will be on my xbox360, for sure... using it for Call of Duty Multiplayer, if possible.
I kindof like this... not sure I would want to hear it out at a club, but I really don't want you to take that the wrong way... it would just sound great for a videogame or film score... work on those snares and bring a little more snap into them... the bassline is fine... it is subtle, but still out front enough for a good surround system. Love the track.
lol... weird request, but I'd like a 5.1 surround mix of this track for my 360 and my home sound system... would be really badass.

I'd put the odd big phat dubby type reverb on every 16th snare or so just to break it up and use a few more kick drum sounds possibly de tuned or transposed to play a kind of kick melody. I reckon it needs a complementary arabic sounding percussion line as well.
I'm more keen on knowing what's the vocal about ? What are they saying ? Where's it from ?
I'd also put airplane chatter in the background, missile launch noises, explosions and gunfire in there as well, maybe even some kids screaming and women sobbing. Just rip the sounds straight of a vid game or the news

Totally disagree - that sort of thing is a) overplaying your hand and b) just plain hokey. There's too much of that Arab = Iraq war/militant connection being made in every other medium - why not just let the track stand on it's own without making an obvious and incorrect connection?whitebait wrote:I'd put the odd big phat dubby type reverb on every 16th snare or so just to break it up and use a few more kick drum sounds possibly de tuned or transposed to play a kind of kick melody.
