Control Surfaces

Post by näjt » Thu Mar 13, 2008 3:31 pm

My next purchase for my home studio is going to be a control surface for Reason 4/Cubase.

Does anyone have any reccomendations? I guess what i'm looking for most is something that's easy to use, inexpensive and good for controling filter freq/res osc volumes etc etc, i'm hoping to sculpt some nice 'morphing' bass sounds among other things.

What do you guys use?

i use the phatboy

Image

(its quite old now, whilst searching for the image this came up on a vintage synth site!!)

spend a bit of time on this as having the wrong controller is down right frustrating

think about the things you want to do eg adjusting cutoff filter up and down, or automating volume etc
this leads to whether you want rotary knobs, faders, x-fader, buttons, pads...

something like the remote sl in the post above is a solidly-built all rounder, much like the faderfox gear

also dont necessarily be put off things which dont look right at first instance, for eg a rotary knob may not be conventional (for some people) to increase/decrease volume but doesnt mean you cant do it

i.e. a rotary knob can be used to move faders, turn knobs or flip switches

I just love the automap- "i wanna change this" - click automap button , move knob/slider map control plus I use it for mixing my groups by hand with the screen turned off - I use the sliders to get the levels sorted

I have the M-Audio Oxygen 8.

Top bit of kit, with 8 assignable control knobs, pitch bend, modulation and fader.

Retailing cheap now, and you get Ableton Lite thrown in!

I use it with Reason V4 and find it a great accompaniment.
Bored of the same old fucking shit.

Bollocks to it...

maudio axiom25 is great too and expands on oxygen buy adding in 8 assignable pressure sensitve pads as well.

my axiom 25 also has preset programs for working with the different instruments in reason. i only know those because i have reason, but pretty sure there are other presets for other software as well. they are not always mapped out to what i want to use, but assigning midi in reason is cake

One of the good things Behringer's made: the BCR2000. It's not as solid as the Novation Remote but it's far cheaper and it does the job very well.

The knobs and sliders on the MPD24 :|

Obviously not what it's intended for, but 8 smooooth endless rotarys and 6 sliders, with a free MPC controller thrown in ain't bad.

i'm pretty sure i saw devnull (breakcore producer) playing one of these a couple days ago at a show here. i couldn't get a good enough look at it to notice a logo but the set up looks to be exactly the same.

i've got an axiom49 and love it

Lotsa knobs lotsa sliders... would be nice if it had some kind of X-Y pad... only beef with it. $100 USD on eBay last summer.

One of these was knocking around in a pawn shop for really cheap here a while back. Wish I'd picked it up, though I don't know where I'd put it.

got the bcr2000 Image
as well, altough i have to admit that setting it up to get the most out of it is not as simple as 'midi learn'+[tweak knob] as most controllers are, but that's a native cubase issue... works like a charm in f.e. ableton,....
