I think it helped him to get the amount of attention that he did, gave journalists (and fans, maybe) a bit of a story to latch onto. But that's not to say they aren't feeling the music, too, it just maybe helps it to get a wider audience to hear the music in the first place. And maybe PR stunt makes it sound a lot more cynical than it actually was, it seems more like an interesting idea that's attracted rather more attention than it was anticipated.epithet wrote:hehe... i dont think i ever said the ONLY reason burial went off is because of a clever PR stunt but it helped.
I also think it's a bit pointless (I mean, it's not like Skream or Loefah are innundated with paparazzi, and it's probably actually lead to more interest in who's behind the tunes than there would have been anyway) but I wouldn't call it a PR stunt unless I knew a lot more about the Hyperdub Public Relations Department meeting where Kode 9 commisioned Spaceape to proactively enable some preliminary market research into the saleability (to the 'key' 18-25 demographic) of a dubstep artist using a 'secret identity' marketing tactic... it seems a bit unlikely.
And on to personal opinions, I'd say he's great, but not neccessarily head and shoulders above Mala, Loefah, Kode 9, Shackleton, Pinch or a few other people on the scene. He's not totally untouchable...

...I think you'll find using the term that someone doesnt "get it" if they dont like it is just a way of showing appreciation for the subjectiveness of music, rather than...well, i actually cant at all see how thats pretentious?UmkhontoWeSizwe wrote:opinions on burial aside, the accolade of genius sure does get banded about pretty willy-nilly these days.
LOL at the suggestion that anyone not into burial just doesn't 'get it'. allow the pretentiousness.
Edit: Just worked out how it could be pretentious, but I myself never mean that its because someone doesnt understand it cos its on a higher level or anything like that, I mean simply that their personal preference doesnt match that of the musics...Although now I look at it, youre right. Saying that someone doesn't get it is pretentious, but ive never meant it that way myself! Think im going to be changing me lingo from now on!

Yep Burial is indeed a genius.. not only because of his production... but because of the figure that he represents himself of being an artist. And the fact that he is so mysterious like his tunes it leaves people wondering who he really is? Which face is it in the crowd?. Is he the one standing beside you? Only a few people know him....
To me... Burial's production capture's my ear the same way pink floyd does... The music never gets old even though you listen to it over and over. Because there are always new things that you heard on the same track that you didn't hear before and at the same time it puts you in a different mindset and emotion.

ok get a thesaurus handy incase you dont understand some of the bigger words. Maybe even ask mummy and daddy to help you out if you get stuck.
Britney Spears could go "off in a club" by shoving a mic up her arse. Now while that may get good reaction. That wouldn't require skill or talent, but potenially could get a good reaction. It's not about what people want, its about what people think will go 'off in a club'
Funnily enough music which may not be particularly well produced or some may not even like can go off in a club.
Hence why I asked because theres a lot of scope for what can go off in a club
Now take your time maybe read this a few times try to get your fuckin stupid little brain round it
BRITNEY SPEARS WOULD NEVER PUT A MIC UP HER FANNY TO PLEASE AN AUDIENCE, YOU FRINGE!
I don't need to know what I'm talking about dickhead. I have this thing called an opinion. You've probably built one about me, and I've built one about you, saying that you are an angry glaswegian arselicking sponge with an attitude problem!
I will tell you what I fucking think.
I wouldn't dance to a tune I don't like. I'll dance to a tune I think sounds good. Would you dance to Phil Collins in a Dubstep rave, to a tune you despise to the highest level?
Ex-fucking-actly.

Surely to form an opinion on something you must first have some sort of knowledge of what you are talking about. Otherwise, you're judging something without knowing anything about it, also known as talking complete bollocks..

daggus and blizzard,
there's no need to take this to the level that it's at currently. find a way to discuss things without getting emotional.
chill out and remember that this thread was about music originally.

bit of a shame this has been moved out of music section cos of fights, get over it kids, and blizzard to say you don't have to know what you're talking about to form an opinion is ridiculous but its your birthday so we'll let you off
