Born and raised in the Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2008 with his first 12" release on Narco.Hz entitled "Shadow Skanking" b/w "Joyful Sound".

A first-generation American born to South African and Australian parents, Dean grew up on music. Beginning his journey as a classically trained violinist at age 3, he later went on to learn the guitar and began using Soundedit 16 on his parents' MacIIci to make music. By his early teens, Dean was playing guitar and keyboards, while writing songs in experimental/industrial bands. He completed his first album at 16.

Around this time, Dean discovered the thriving world of San Francisco drum&bass. At the age of eighteen, he had his first gig (as Genome) at the legendary drum&bass club "Eklektic", where he would later become a resident. Known for his razor-sharp mixing and blending, Dean quickly became one of San Francisco's premier and most sought-after DJs. He would later go on to become a resident at the legendary weekly Phuturo. Dean's many creative talents were not lost on the San Francisco drum and bass scene, as he worked for some years as graphic designer and general consultant to friends Hive and Gridlok's labels, Violence Recordings and Project Fifty-one.

Discovering the Dubstep sound in 2006, Dean dove headfirst into production and quickly began to develop his unique sound as DJG. His music production style has been described as hyper-melodic and layered, full of groove and rich frenetic energy, while he blends dub and techno sounds with "basslines that sing". A multi-faceted producer, DJG's sound ranges from heady, deep and melodic outings to energetic dancefloor bangers.

DJG draws influence from experimental and boundary-pushing sounds including everything from dub and techno, to the golden era of drum and bass, to the raw sounds of east coast hip hop, and the sound and vibes of jazz fusion. For the listener, an undeniable emotional connection emerges from the realm of any DJG tune, and the dancefloor cannot help but to be swept up by it.

In 2007, DJG won a competition held by Pressing Issues Recordings on the internet forum Dubstepforum.com in which his track "Bender" was elected for release.

DJG currently resides in the Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco, balancing his time between graphic design, making beats and DJing gigs around the country. He also serves as co-manager to the musically eclectic weekly "Shelter" in San Francisco. You can find DJG's recent releases on Narco.Hz, Noppa Recordings, Subway Recordings and Pressing Issues.

Chris Widman - (Abstract Science, WLUW 88.7) Chicago, IL

Image

Chris Widman is a DJ that defies easy classification. Host of the weekly radio program Abstract Science (on WLUW 88.7fm) since it's inception in 1997 and a DJ since 1995, his cohesive sets intertwine records from across the electronic music spectrum and beyond. Widman's comprehensive approach has led to billing with underground luminaries Amon Tobin, Apparat, Cinematic Orchestra, Daedelus, Deadbeat, Diz, Dosh, Isotope 217, Jaga Jazzist, Jan Jelinek, John Tejada, Lady Sovereign, M83, M.Doughty (of Soul Coughing), Manual, Mark Rae, Matthew Dear, Meat Beat Manifesto, Monolake, Mr. Scruff, Phon.o, The Orb, Scanner, Sleeparchive, UNKLE, Telefon Tel Aviv and Ulrich Schnauss, not to mention appearances at Resfest, the Chicago World Music Festival, Chicago's Museum of Contempory Art, Chicago Cultural Center, the Rhinocererous Theatre Festival, LA's dublab.com, Germany's Club Bogaloo, and many of Chicago's choice venues (including Metro, Empty Bottle, Abbey Pub, Double Door and residencies at Smartbar and Sonotheque.)

Cringer - (Part Time Suckers, Dubfront, WNUR 89.3, Dubstep.fm) Chicago, IL

Image

Raised by jackals in the darkest mountain recesses of Appalachia, Cringer emerged from the back woods armed with two turntables and a fattened sack of dubplates. Traveling to Chicago, he found home with the Part Time Sucker crew bringing his signature brand of bass-ridden drum-driven Jungle and Drum n' Bass. Since then, Cringer has crossed paths with the low level rumblings known as Dubstep and, after dueling with swords on the beaches of Ganryu Island, they joined forces to untwine soundscapes that exist where bass becomes "sub". Currently, Cringer can be found ruthlessly rattling bass bins, scorching dancefloors and tracking the sun in anticipation of 2012. To seek the Cringer, one merely need follow the trail of toppled speaker stacks and demolished sub cabinets.

Phaded - (Konkrete Jungle Chicago, Dubfix, Dented Sessions, Dubstep.fm, Dnbradio.com) Chicago, IL

Image

Phaded began his affair with the beat in the late 90's, doing production and later Dj'ing a blend of Underground Hiphop, Downtempo and Dub tracks. Inspired by the musical brilliance of producers and artists spanning a vast number of genres, there was a constant compulsion to present some of the most underground of sounds and rhythms in his sets. Becoming part of the emerging Dubstep scene in the US was only a natural progression for Phaded, as it tapped into the many facets of his musical foundation. Over the last year there has been great success for his weekly broadcast- The Dented Sessions on Dubstep.fm as well as dropping crowd-pleasing performances around the Midwest US. 2008 only looks brighter for this sub junkie, with an eye toward lending more his own productions to the scene in upcoming months. Be ready for some bass weight with Phaded when you enter the building.
