only a year ago or something you couldnt even sidechain in Reason! the synths are sick, but i swear the processing tools and filters just aren't / weren't good enough to give those kind of textures and that kind of fatness. although to be fair i can't do it with anything, so maybe reason can do it :/
yes you could. Redrum -> Spider -> Compressor -> Mixer and the same for any other synth you use :)

yeh i should really state that i love Reason, and think its a great programme. i am just stunned at the idea that they (Claro Intelecto in particular) could get sound like that out of it

Talented bastard basically.

From what I've heard done by people who are really good with their tools (and personally I probably couldn't get CI's sound out of the biggest and most expensive oldskool analogue setup you can imagine), the actual gap between analogue kit and digital kit gets exaggerated a lot, partly because analogue stuff splurges out that sound as soon as you turn it on, whereas with digital emulations it takes quite a lot of care and attention and selecting the right tool and using it just right...

EXACTLY. I think it's exaggerated as well to be honest. I actually don't use Reason. I only use Logic though so the argument is similar (obviosuly with a few soft synths thrown in). You're right, it's about care and attention, loads of tweaking, awesome eqing, brilliant source selection and a bit of sidechaining to create space.

It seems we're all in agreement though: IT'S EASIER SAID THAN DONE!

ofcourse reasons a good piece of software, i love cutting beats up in reason and arrangin an mixdown in logic :D, all the pieces of software do the same thing but in there own ways, just gotta choise the one for you.

The Mclass compressor has a sidechain input on the back bro, u just need to mult the signal n do some routing round the back, u can do a shite-load with control voltages with most of the modules. Even without the mclass u can do it, at the end of the day a compressor is just a VCA and there are loads of ways to control volume via CV... matrix seq is sik!

I saw on net somewhere a guy had devised a way of wiring up a HPF with various modules cos the ECF dont have one.

I think people that come from a hardware background actually get on with reason better/quicker as ur used to wiring stuff up in odd ways...

Spider is prob the single most important module in reason, without it I'd not be able to use the app at all.

Altho these days I mostly use it piggy-backed into Live, which is a crazy combo, throw in some analogue summing and ur straight!

... ohyh. The differance between hardware / software is def just how much quiker it is to pull a sound with H/W. U need to spend ALOT more time in S/W, but u can save and instant recall, which basically levels it fr me.

...reason racks can get mad deep.

And, whats stopping u from using 'ambient/hip hop themed' refills ? its all just sounds! theres a few apps around that will convert AKAI/GIGA Sampler formated patches/samples into NNXT as well, with a lil time/bandwidth u can get loads of sounds

Yes, it is well worth shelling out for.... if you enjoy using the program!

You could stick to Reason 3 which is cheaper and less confusing than Reason 4. (Imho)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
paying the extra money just so u can enjoy the superior sequencer and FARFAR superior thor synthesiser is really worth it!
or u can just dl it like most of us did

I completely disagree!

Get the demo for both, then test the sequencer and extra devices in R4 against those in R3. The program with the easiest work flow should be bought. No one likes to battle agaisnt a program trying to do simple things when trying to be creative!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reasons I dislike Reason 4.

I find the R4 sequencer over complicated, bloated and a drag to use...

Thor looks like poo (literaly), and is too small and fiddly.

I was majorly dissapointed when I found out that only the 3rd filter can be used as an insert effect for other devices. Thor has 3 filters ffs, Malstrom lets you use both available filters as an insert, why doesn't Thor allow the same?!

Although it is only a slight annoyance, in R4, one has to switch off the preset button in the prefereneces menu so the devices don't load up with a stupid patch by default... :?

Finally, Reason songs and combi patches are not backwards compatible, even if non of the new features/devices are used. For peeps like me who share combi patches or work with others using Reason, this creates problems.

Other synths have better featuresets than Thor. (Z3ta+, Absynth, FM8, Massive, & all the Rob Papen Synths for starters). For me they look nicer and are easier to use. They have mod matrixes, stepsequencers, fatter filters, x/y controllers, multi stage envelopes, more built in effects and even bloody lfo control over lfo's! Some of them further allow you to use your own samples as the oscillator source! (Z3ta+, Absynth, Albino 3)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMHO, R4 is bloatware! :|

but,

Each to their own! :)

thor has all those features, i'mnot sure about the difference in filters but they seem very warm and powerful to me. with simple use of the programmer u can enable the mod/global/filter envelopes to do certain things, and to use lfo over lfo automation just put your normal lfo assignment in the programmer then scale it by the 2nd lfo, it's not too complicated but it is overwhelming at first. The sounds im getting out of it these days are sounding very professional.

yeh i meant that you couldnt before the m-class were introduced, but i guess that was quite a while back now. plus you say it could be done anyway

i guess i have become lazy in the way i use the program and have stopped investigating unknown technical aspects properly... need to get on that
