Whats missing?

Post by xthewiddler » Tue May 20, 2008 7:18 am

i've tried some pads, but didnt like them, i want somethihng to sit in the back with the bass to hold the musical melody, but not take away from the starkness and openess of the track

any help or ideas would be great! thanks

nice track man, does defo need something tho, maybe some discreet strings lurking in background, or some delayed highend ambienty blips over a few notes every couple of bars

edit

would love a 320 when you figure it out tho

Some nice reverb'd / echo'd stabs might go pretty well I think, its sounding pretty top as it is, although it is missing something.

As Darkmatter said maybe some strings, some slow quiet strings would actually go pretty nice I think.

First of all sweet Production.
Not sure it needs too musch, but i can agree with Legendary & Darkmatter, even along the lines of the off beat string reverbed stab's, really nice & washed out, would work well with the stutter on the vocal.

i definitely agree with soft strings. i know zero about musical theory but some sort of counter-melody? does that mean anything? basically a melody that plays in the background but nicely complements whats already there.

when the vocals are present they seem to have enough potencyand reverb to cover the emptyness.... perhaps just low synths either in the background constantly or just in the gaps?

sounds nice anyways

thanks

yeah i like how the vocals hold most of the space but there are still gaps

i also have to work on the automation of the vocal effects they are still a bit sloppy coming in and out

Yeah had a listen, nice track man.

I think it needs a more dominant synth section just to fill out that mid section. Put it just under the vocals maybe? Could also add a couple of rises and fade outs to enhance every 8 bars or so.

I can hear you've double tracked the vocal section, and slightly de-tunned one? Like the tremolo vox underneath. Have a play around with some delay and get some nice tails off the odd syllable to get that repetative echo. Can hear you've used some delay on the vocals but a little more could help them roll with timbre of the track.

:D

i also wanted to ask once again, is the bass too low?

i like how the bass in this song is more of just a sub feeling rather than the emphasis on the bass

whats your take on sub that can only be heard on big systems?

I've been thinking this lately. On my tunes recently I've just been having sub and no mid-bass which makes it sound a bit shit on the average persons speakers/hi-fi but I don't really care. This music is meant for big systems with big subs. Dubstep listeners should know that to hear this music properly you need a sub, if they don't, fuck 'em. You know it sounds good, that's all that matters and when people hear it in the dance they'll know it's good too. :P

i liked the bass, it stuck out here but then i was playing it through 'the monitors of truth'.

i think in regard to your original question i like the 'less is more' in this...but made me think, reaktor sound generator could sound good in this (metaphysical Function, skewell) nice tones without having to be strictly musical if that makes sense (probably would if you had the above 2 sound generators that i pointed out).

personally preferred the first version you put up, this new one sounded a bit too 'pop music' like for me...previous one could have been quite sinister sounding (yeh seriously, i just said sinister). it's your tune though.

Yeah, it does sound a little poppy now, but that's the constant vocal, the sweeps in the back are good, subtle and not too busy, could even get them a little more nasty to try a take a little off the vocal...maybe.
