What do you really think about the word 'chav'?

Post by Pistonsbeneath » Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:39 am

I don't use it myself as i think it's mocking people that you think are poor..

I'm so fucking sick of middle class white teenagers going on about 'chavs'

I would assume that on dubstepforum there are a few people that wear hoodies? well you're all chavs according to how these kids think!

so do you say it?

yes, I say it, but it more specific than wearing a hoodie, its not about clothing, wealth or class, its the way a particular section of society acts and thinks. Its that rudeboy, alco pop, bing drinking, spend more money on my car than my car is worth, arrogant, malicious....just nasty piece of work typ of pople, usually found in small towns/suburbs.

course there are steriotypes, like wearing burrberry, but I don't belive in steriotyping people, yet if I meet someone and the fill the criteria then calling them a chav is credible

do u not remember my rant? chav is a word designed by the media to promote class segregation as well as segregatin amongst people in general. i remember a hardcore chav mate of mine from a while back refering to his own as chavs. and this dude was one of them hardcore violent racists who was big into his football. i wonder what the next word will be anyway lol

i feel the same as you man- it seems like the only 'acceptable' form of discrimination around at the moment, and is usually a word that the middle classes use to sneer at who they perceive as an underclass

I do agree with this aswell, think that many people do use the term as a form of discrimination and a way of segregating classes. It is not my understanding of the word but it has made me rethink using the term.

A hoody isn't a chav though.

To me a chav is normally a northerner who deciedes to still wear Nike Tns, with their socks pulled over their reebok tracksuit bottoms and also wears a nike peeked cap with the peek like a 'V' and a Nickleson/YSL/Hackett polo shirt on.

Mr Hyde wrote:to me your classic chav look is someone trying to look a bit like football hooligan clothes- reebok classics, sovvies, gold chain, thin nike cap, striped polo shirt. probably cost a fair bit to look like that, they're doing it on purpose to have a certain look so probably quite like the label!

you two beat me to it with those posts. to me chav is a definite choice, you can be poor and working class without being a chav

possibly it is a bit discriminatory but given the behaviour of a lot of these chavs it's understandable. that said, a lot of chavs can actually be alright, have had a really good time with them on nights out in the past. suppose a lot of kids end up acting like something they're not due to societal pressures - i'm sure the same is true of a lot of innner city rudeboy types

sure but I don't understand why we need a blanket insult & label for anyone WE think fits this criteria...it is ultimately just people isn't it?

I just stick to idiot, twat, tnuc etc which can be applied to a variety of things as opposed to chav as it stands for Council Housed And Violent..

I've been threatened with stabbing by a person exactly meeting your criteria but i really don't see how this makes him a chav...

seen, but never came to a conclusion on what Chav stood for.

also having said I use the term I do find it dosn't happen often, and less and less by the day, I also prefer other terms, like twat. I do not agree with using and term in a blanket fashion, and this has happened with the word chav, which has made the word less usefull, tho it still does have a valid application this has been overshadowed by its discriminatory usage.

christ I can really chat some bullshit.

simpley put, Chav has a specific use, has become a blanket discriminatory term, is no longer used by me. :D

for us in kent, chav used to be used, alot, by people in society, now people call the 'undesirables' pikies...which again promotes class segregation imo

never used it myself, well, very very rarely
