"the Andy C of dubstep"

Post by hera » Wed Jun 04, 2008 4:37 am

I've heard this term from 3 people living in different parts of the world each referring to different djs. it makes me cringe all the same, but what the hell? humor me.

who is the Andy C of dubstep? *cringe*

is it NType, as nominated by the LA heads? is it Skream? my mum (big up my mum)? Cthulhu?

More importantly, who is the Judge Jules of dubstep? Who is the Scooter? Who is the DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer?

Its an absolute insult to call anyone the Andy C of anything. No-one deserves that.

LOL. I think N-thype could pass for Judge Jules i he donned a pair of specks and started saying shit like "Last time I heard that, I was chewing my face off in a field in the early Nineties."

the fact that it even came up in a conversation like that is alarming enough. who cares. some people would consider it an insult before a compliment.

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've heard stuff like this bandied around by middle-aged writers in planning meetings. "The Photek of dubstep... The Carl Craig of dubstep... The Mantronix of dubstep... The DJ Otzi of dubstep" etc etc, each of which I've heard applied to different producers.

Most of these people who were saying things like "The Joe Strummer of jungle... The John Lennon of techno... The Mickey Dolenz of skiffle". It is meaningless but I suppose it helps people like them, without much of a frame of reference, find one. And without repetitive pigeonholing like this, most music journalists of a certain age would be out of a job, and have to go and work at the Daily Mail's weekend magazine writing about wine or ecotourism.

Something like:-

I hear nuff chat about dizzee and wiley,
The UK's equivilent to Britney and Kylie.
