Producing outside of the studio (laptop)

Post by attmay » Fri Jun 27, 2008 9:22 pm

Has anyone here been producing their music outside of the studio? Like in a coffee shop or a park... or out in the middle of the desert? I'm just wondering if anyone's noticed the change in atmosphere having an effect on their creativity. I'm getting my first laptop next month and I'm going to try producing in different spots and then go back to the studio for the mixdown. Make a track in the middle of Stonehenge or something..see what happens :D

I am ordering my first laptop tomorrow and this is one of the main reasons I am getting a laptop.

I am honestly tired of sitting in my bedroom producing, even though I have acquired some nice equipment over the years.

I can't wait to get it, I plan on just sitting outside my house or in the back yard while producing, and taking it with me when I go to Chicago in August.

O-krap... i forgot about the midi controller. I'm always using a touch pad mouse, but I'm going to have to get one of those small midi keyboards. So much for being discreet, now everyone's going to want to know what I'm doing. Oh well...

Word! Back yard, lawn chair, beer, bubbler... and a half naked girl fanning me with a big palm leaf. It was SO hot in the studio where I produced my last two tracks at that I almost had a heat stroke. Boring too. I'm over all of that for a minute. Oh and make that 2 girls with palm leafs..

I just spent 1 year at a job where I was on the train 3 hours a day. The majority of travel time I would be working on beats. Ends up being quite productive! It also made the journey pass very quickly, sometimes I'd get to my station and was like 'awww man, already here??'

I do think its good to mix up your locations. Especially if you're getting frustrated with something, or are tempted to go on forums

Might be interesting making something entirely in audio on the laptop, just arranging samples, then transfer it back to the desktop for tweaking and mixdown. Can't get my main computer set up for the moment, so am really tempted to start doing that.

Like the idea of sneakily producing in the park, or in a cafe or something.

Yes, I would normally wholeheartedly agree... but I just had a bad BAD experience with hardware and now I'm so turned off that I wouldn't even touch an AKAI MPC 4000 with rubber gloves. I'll be over it someday... I'm currently seeing a therapist and taking heavy medication. They say these things take time though...

Or at the beach.. I wonder what I would come up with next to the ocean. Again, lawn chair & half naked girls with palm leafs included. Seriously though, in case I decide to try the ocean thing out, is there some sort of laptop cover I can get to keep the sand out? If not I'll just set up a tent and close the bug screen so I can see the waves and keep the sandy wind out of my buttons at the same time.

I do not get why people tend to sit down in the most crowded places and work on "creative" stuff on their laptops. Mostly somewhere, where everyone can see them doing "it". Thats like a disease here in Berlin.

I think it makes you focus. Knowing people might be looking at what your doing actually gives me some confidence to make something sick and make people say 'Wow'! I know I shouldn't bring this up too much, but being a kid making this kind of music can catch eyes at times.

A fence? That SUCKS. I really did want to try it. Oh well, that's not the only place on earth with intersecting lay lines. Thanks for the heads up, saved me a airplane ticket.

THAT-is-SICK. GD amazing in fact, 'cause it's exactly, and I mean EXACTLY, what I envisioned after Shane reminded me that I'd need a MIDI controller a few posts back. Li'l Micro NASA-looking controlers that can fit in my pocket. Thought I'd have to settle for a boring & bulky one-octave piece of krap. You're rad Yoni, 's why you're always on my top list..

haha glad it helped!

i was actually looking to get this for the same reason

when i make a track staring around at the walls it would be different than say on a moving train or in a tent in the woods

this experiment of yours is one i hope to try eventually
