spectrum analyser

Post by bjackman » Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:04 pm

basically, i'm a nerd; i want perfect mixdowns. i only use Reason (which has no real spectrum analyser)

i've got Logic 5.5 but until i can buy a proper soundcard (no money), it's making no noise

so my plan is to find a programme tht will do the job on the overall output of all my sound - can anyone help me out? (bear in mind - Reason means no VSTs. yeah baby.)

ps nothing against Reason - it's brilliant for being creative with but i'm more of a nerd than an artist

Free spectrum analyser plugins:

http://www.dontcrack.com/freeware/softw ... Analyzers/

http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Pr ... eqAnalyst/

http://www.voxengo.com/product/SPAN/

http://www.rndigital.org/inspector.html

Not free but worth a look anyway:

http://www.rndigital.org/frequal-izer.html (

http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=233

All of the plugins mentioned above are VST plugins. I suppose you'll have to find a VST wrapper for logic or a work around (google).

You could also export your song before the final mixdown as individual track parts then load them up into a free VST compatible host like Audacity or Reaper for mixing....

I have been rocking the Sonalksis EQs lot, of late. They have a built in Spectrum analyser which is great.

The Renoise analyzer is good, but it is too fast, and I am not sure how accurate the curves are.

(I am not slagging off Renoise however. I am 100% a Renoise freak, to the point where it annoys people in real life)

yep i've tried a ridiculous amount of drivers but the sound card is just so shit - it came with the PC and it's a Dell family style PC. the soundcard constantly makes bare noise n stuff and only has one input and one output

exporting each individual track is a very gd idea - i have Reaper so i'll definitely have to try that one. cheers guys

and guillermo? go back to spain. we don't need you here.

How do you change your default rack?

"Demo song" every time I load up is well annoying.

You do not need a spectrum analyser... it wil actually hold you back in terms of learnig frequencys besides you have got the best type of spectrum analysers stuck on each side of your head :D

This is a really interesting point - given your expertise, is there a common mistake that producers relying on spectrum analyser's make? Are people trying too hard for a 'flat' response despite what the music wants? I have the inspector freebie on my master channel at all times, but I don't think I 'rely' on it - it's more another source of info, and it helps put my attrocious monitoring/room setup into context.

If you wish to become a true Jedi you will learn to fight blindfolded

Did i say that out loud

The spectrum analyser is holding you back,Think about it this way ...the only way that it can help you with your room set up is if you have two identical calibrated specrum analysers one measuring the output of the pc and the other one measuring (via a microphone placed at your listening position)what you are hearing and then comparing the two graphs.unless you know your room there are so many variables that can affect what you are hearing to what the graph is showing that it`s really a wast of time unless you are using it for a particular problem.
Trust me I wanted one for years (since1985 but that`s another story)Before i even started trying to produce.,
Regards
Jason
