Gnosticism and Dubstep "I seek knowledge"

Post by keith p » Mon Jul 10, 2006 6:46 am

I believe music can aid a person in expanding their awareness of the world. Dubstep is one of those forms of music.

Gnosis translates literally as knowledge or enlightment. Ones path toward "knowledge" is obtained through personal revelation, epiphany, and the expanding of consciousness.

Now dubstep is a form of music that allows the listener to truely visualize what they're hearing but most importantly it aids the listener in observing their environment.

Ex:While driving home in a storm today I truely quieted my mind and observed everything from drops of water rolling off the window to light reflecting off a group of distant clouds. All while listening to the Oneiric album of course;)

Its a bit cliche but its an old idea in music. True musicians often express their awareness and understanding of the world through music.

What I'm essentially saying is that this music's richness and subtle complexities can truely aid in one's quest for gnosis or enlightment...or at least provide a good soundtrack for the ride;)

This is actually worth some consideration. I'll have a think and post something later.

Listening to Distances Mistral at 10:00am on a Sunday morning after being up all night gets pretty gnostic. Don't they believe that John the baptist is the real Jesus, Judas was cool and Jesus was a political rebel and a normal man not the son of GOD. I never trusted them Romans thats all i'm sayin.

Not always the case, but isn't this just leading a self-aware and open-minded life?

I get a bit worried when I hear these comparisons as I remember trance folks saying the same thing years back, when it was blatantly people getting of their mash and being pretentious to score chicks.

yeah, it's gnosis for US - people that love the sound, and can float in the bass. i can get the same vibe off of satie, marley, morricone, rza, whateverwhatever, if i need to.

it is quite nice to have something new though, and I was happy to find it when i did

music can definitely put you on the path...just dont let your mind stray too far from your body, especially when you're drivin.

dubstep definitely puts me in a meditative state in the right environment.
trance-like maybe an unsettling comparison but not altogether untrue...just forget about all the digweed bullshit and get primal a la Altered States.

Those are different beliefs of individual sects. There really was no blanket theology for the original Gnostics.

This looks amusing - power napping, now power meditation for those without enough time to transcend

Thich Nhat Han offers an understanding of Buddhism for lay people. He tries to make these techniques applicable for people in the "real world".

To be honest, most of the people that I think are the most enlightened rarely pursue spirituality for it's own sake though, it's just learning lessons as you go along, and remembering them. Not been particularly convinced by most "spiritual" folks I've met up with - when push comes to shove, you find out exactly how "enlightened" they really are. People forget we're animals, no matter how smart we might like to think we are.

mmm.. how about elephants and dolphins, believe they also have a sort of self awerness (as they have humor and other emotions)...

as far as i know music (sound) is the only sense witch goes directly to the emotional part of the brain without being interpretated before (like vision...)

Not sure if your describing the same thing I am but sometimes when i listen to music i enter a level of deep concentration, similar to a depersonalized state in which you watch the world like a movie, in slow motion, detached and observant but extremely aware. The same thing can be achieved by doing nothing, in short - meditation. I find two types of music have a tendancy to produce this effect, firstly anything deep, repetitios, hypnotic you zoom out - hear different patterns, the same sound mutates inside your head. the second is 'free jazz or noise in which (at least with me) you have to 'let go' for the music to start making sense and getting into the corners of your soul or mind or whatever.

Make any sense?
:?

Incidentally the first thing that poped into my head was the album title 'wisdom through music' by pharoah saunders.

I don't think (what is descibred) above is really awareness (?), although it can put you at ease, like everthings alright. from the production side or just listener, if you take influence from a wide pallete and 'seek' music or sound from various sources, (at least my experience) you also poses the tendancy to seek knowlege. The more music you expose yourself to it all starts to blend and make sense. I think if i continue ill just start typeing jibberish, if thats not what i've already done.

I totally agree with that Bill. I can remember a Beastie Boys interview from way back where they were talking about starting a conversation by discussing the connections between Sonic Youth, Sun Ra and Public Enemy - all totally different types of music, but all with similar elements and ideas.

I can clearly see the connection musically between thrash metal and techstep (progressions and mood) although some seem not to notice it, presumably so they won't lose their tribal colours. I think eclectism is helpful in getting a better understanding of music and life in general, would be very tedious listening to the same thing day in, day out
