1990: strange but quite beutiful/hypnotizing. basically a series of the directors dreams. not a continual plot just cool looking imagery and visuals
Yes yes yes yes!!! One of my fav films ever!!! It is stunningly beautiful and seriously, if anyone can tell me the song in the Peach Blossom Dolls scene, omg that would end a 5+ year search for me.
Oh and Rashomon? Anyone say this yet? That was brilliant!

Rashomon, overrated in my view. The only thing i get a kick out of in that film, is the light coming thru the trees as he walks thru the forestbellybelle wrote:dTruk wrote:Akira Kurosawa's : Dreams

considering the time period and the whole multiple perspectives approach, i can't help but love it. It was totally impressive to me.jahtao wrote:Rashomon, overrated in my view. The only thing i get a kick out of in that film, is the light coming thru the trees as he walks thru the forest

I'm by no means well-versed in Japanese cinema, so take these suggestions by the following filmmakers as you will:
Hiroshi Teshigahara(my favorite filmmaker from Japan, Woman in the Dunes was already suggested, his other films are wonderful, as well)
Seijun Suzuki(probably my favorite for Japanese action and gangster films)
Yasujiro Ozu(frankly, I am *not* as big an Ozu fan as many others, but there are certain Ozu films which are both beautiful and devastating, I'll list my recommendations: Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Clan, A Hen in the Wind(probably my favorite Ozu film), Tokyo Story, and Late Spring)
Kenji Mizoguchi(everything I've seen by him has floored me, Life of Oharu, Sansho the Bailiff, and Ugetsu)
Mikio Naruse(The best filmmaker from Japan for women: Flowing, Floating Clouds, When a Woman Ascends the Stairs)
Then a bunch of Kurosawa: Ran(my favorite), Yojimbo(a very close 2nd), Stray Dog, Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha
