The Drunk Monk
Ever since The Drunk Monk (Gaz Williams, Manchester - UK) was born he has been surrounded by music. His father was, and still very much is, a vinyl addict and collects everything from rare reggae, jazz and world music to dub, drum and bass and downbeat/electronic, as well as being a reggae DJ himself and running the very successful Lift Global Music Club in Glossop, UK.
From the early age of 14, Gaz started buying vinyl and DJing and promoting his own events. After Djing on and off for a good few years, Gaz got more seriously into DJing and promoting in 2002 when he started his own night 'Urban Poison' in his parent's hometown Glossop. Concentrating mainly on hip-hop, breakbeat and drum and bass, Urban Poison was very successful and brought in guests such as Baobinga, The Electrosluts, Ca and Skinny Sumo.
In 2003 Gaz moved to Liverpool to start university and, under the name Budou Kiba, joined the No Fakin'/Common Ground Collective. At this point he was mainly collecting and playing rare funk, soul and hiphop at the weekly 'Dusty' night at The Magnet Club and, alongside the No Fakin' crew, supported acts such as People Under The Stairs, Edan, DJ Vadim, DJ Woody, Alice Russell, Mark Rae and Treva Whateva.
As part of his university course, Gaz moved to Shanghai, China for one year (2005 – 2006) and very quickly found himself involved in the local alternative music scene. After meeting up with Phreaktion boss DJ Siesta, he soon started playing funk and soul at the Phreaktion nights at Madam Zungs and Pegasus and supported the likes of LTJ Bukem and Shy FX. Not long after arriving in Shanghai, Gaz, along side dji and DJ Yo, set up The Uprooted Sunshine Soundsystem, Shanghai's first real reggae sound. The Sound System grew from strength to strength and has been running for almost 3 years now and has members from China, Japan, France, Canada, Switzerland, Italy and England. At this time, Gaz was also one of the co-founders and the main driving force behind PAUSE, a collective made up of Phreaktion, Antidote and Uprooted Sunshine, and held free afternoon events showcasing local and international musicians, djs, artists and photographers. Although maybe only every 2 or 3 months, the PAUSE events were a great success and brought more of a community feel to the local promoter and DJ scene in Shanghai, which allowed people to work together and to really help the scene grow into what we have in Shanghai today.
In 2006, Gaz returned to the UK to finish his university course and rejoined the No Fakin'/Common Ground Collective but this time played mainly reggae, dub and dancehall. As well as gigs in and around Liverpool, The Common Ground Collective also had its own stage at The Garden Festival, in Zadar, Croatia in the summer of 2007, with guests such as Domu, Mr Scruff, Soil and Pimp Sessions and The Overproof Soundsystem.
In August 2007, Gaz moved back to Shanghai and got straight back into the scene with full force. The Uprooted Sunshine Soundsystem had been continuously growing while he was away and not long after he had arrived back were playing at The Yue Festival with Faithless, Ozomatli and Talib Kweli, Antidote's 2nd birthday and The Shanghai Music Conference. After a few months of being back in Shanghai, Gary Wang aka DJ V-Nutz (The Lab) approached Gaz with the prospect of together opening an alternative music club in Shanghai, and from this The Shelter was born.
The Shelter opened on December 1st 2007 and has since caused waves in the Shanghai nightlife scene. Hosting everything from underground Hip-Hop, Reggae and Funk to Dubstep, Techno, IDM and Drum and Bass, The Shelter is now the home of Shanghai's alternative DJ scene with the best local dj and promotion crews involved, such as Antidote, Phreaktion, Void, The Lab, Uprooted Sunshine and STD. With local guests such as Sulumi, B6, Liman, Zhong Chi, Mickey Zhang, Ben Huang and Meng Qi, as well as international guests including DJ Kentaro, Cut Chemist, Nu-Mark, Goth-Trad, The Bug, The Jungle Brothers, Shimon, Robert Hood, Nomadico and Z-Trip, the roster of djs and acts who have played at The Shelter is growing week by week. In an environment where clubs open and close every week, The Shelter is showing no signs of slowing down and is fast approaching its one year anniversary. It was also voted Best Newcomer and Best Club 2008 by readers of City Weekend Magazine. As well as running The Shelter, Gaz is still also DJing with Uprooted Sunshine and also runs the dubstep event Sub-Culture, as well as being resident DJ at The Shelter.
