New Shonky tune - Anathema

Post by shonky » Tue Jul 25, 2006 5:14 pm

Got this mostly finished today, appreciating your constructives as ever. Needs proper mixdown, and not sure that some of the sections blend well but hey

I like it

I like it, you could mix it into some el B sets and stuff, or any old school style. The beat is still different though, which is what is good about it, the pause before the 2 step. I wanted it to speed up in parts but I don't know if that is possible, it felt like it was gonna launch into a faster paced bit.

like the vibe you're creating. think bass could be a little tighter, more liquid if that makes any sense. maybe splitting it into freqs, and eqing themwould help?

beats are pretty cool, but need to sound harder, more clipped imo. they also need a little more variation in volume to sound less artificial maybe. perhaps the odd fat clap with reverb on it to open the beat up a bit more.

it makes me think of orbital/burial combo. just needs a bit more groove / snap in the drums and varying the second bass pattern to go deeper every 4 bars perhaps..... :D

like the breakdown bass pattern... maybe continue it on the 2nd drop?

hope some of that makes sense!
is it?

NO.

Cheers for your critique fellas, much appreciated. As I said it's an early mix, so I'll have to get it completed properly at some point (along with the others). I've also now upped this to soundclick if anyone wants to just stream the audio, or get a 128mp3 (always thinking of the dial-up people, awww).

this tune is nice & deep mate!
im a big fan of the skipped garage beats - more people need to be makin funkier beats like these.. does make it sound kinda old, but thats no bad thing imo..

was gonna say exactly the same thing.. would prevent the tune from becomin too repetative or long..

Nice work. I like the dark vibe, but it seems like its missing something. Maybe add a few more variations on the intruments, maybe a few more effects to add some falvor to its dark character.

wow :o .The imagery that it ivokes for me is of driving through New York circa 1985 in the middle of the night when it's pissing with rain, by ya self. Edward Woodward in the Equelizer :D:, ya get mi. Don't think ya need to do much to it , like you say, mix it down agian if you want, but it sound ok .ie. If you'd not said any thing i wouldn't have surgested doing that.
Six minutes and i'm not bored. Ya gotta be doing something right. I've got technical prefrences but i'm not you, so why get borring about what i'd like to hear. Understated tension, heavy yet not in ya face. Blah Blah Blah :5:

Just remebered a techi ting. The drums. Like the slight swing ya got there . Just of the beat by a few clock ticks. Hardly any one gets that. It's the key to good drum programing. Stick a propper drum loop in an audio editer and look how the beats are not on beat. I've got a few John Bhonem breaks that are so off, but they sound fucking well nice.

Anough of the ass kissing already

Cheers man, find it better to avoid quantize where necessary and just nip the beats in the matrix editor where needed (although I did change the beats around a bit from the original version - they were getting abstract to the point of dementia). Worth pushing the snares slightly ahead or behind the beat depending on what feel you want (gotta love that Logic incremental delay thing). Cheers for the Edward Woodward thing, exactly what I was aiming for (?). Above the law indeed, ho ho ho

def agree with whole darkside dnb thing - really really like that bass question and answer thing you got going. Beats are good, but not really my taste. I didn't think the atmosphere noise was very good though - sounded a bit sample packy...

the other tune of yours I listened to was Nihil, which is large - again the bass!!
