cool.
I dont even know where the shuffle button is in Reason/Cubase lol.
I write every hit myself on a keyboard. Only way to make music imo.
Filling in a grid with a mouse will sound exactly that.
not a bad thing necessarily? i don't see how it's any different if you still quantize your hits.
unleash the power of shuffle!!
your tunes won't sound robotic that way
and LOL @ shuffle button

you dont know what triplets are?
I think people should have a basic understanding of music before they start producing
a simple questionnaire before they can log in to the production area maybe?
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

exactly. Its funny how the so called big players in Dubstep (not saying any names) have most of their drums on 1/4 or 1/8?!?!!
Som1 just pointed out to me Reason does have a Shuffle button the redrum. I dont use Redrum so didnt know, lol.

dont be a bell end..im sure you've had to ask some 'stupid questions' in the past.
Also yes, if i had a midi controller then i would put beats in that way, unfortunately it broke when i was moving house. so until then..the matrix sequencer is fine and good to get ideas down quickly

I would instead just push record and then while things are playing click the mouse over the virtual keyboard so it puts the hits down for you.
Try it;)

<<agreed (darkmatteruk). ive read interviews with countless 'big' producers who use simple techniques. appleblim sometimes uses basic fruity sounds and just changes em. i think (not sure tho) that skream was once quoted as saying he uses presets. a technical producer can be shit, i hear plenty of pretentious well produced shit ona daily basis. it sounds like a cliche thing to say, but it's about feelings and vibes. burial claims to have very little technical knowledge, there's that old interview (blackdown blogspot i think) where he goes on about 'tech boy' producers. older 'proto' dubstep, the early stuff on the grime compilations etc is really quite basic stuff, same with proper grime.

The techy side is not that important but you need to know a few things of course.
Play with your drums, get a groove and get a hook. disco.

Since everyone else is being so helpful
Triplets are basically having three evenly spaced notes in the space you'd normally have two.
Basically
Code: Select all
'straight' beat eg trance:
K K K K
h h H h h h H h h h H h h h H h
Triplet beat:
K K K K
h h h H h h h h h H h h h h h H h h h h h H h h
Swung beat:
K K K K
h h H h h h H h h h H h h h H h
And the triplet grid is a grid (on a piano roll or drum editor) that divides into threes rather than twos at some level so you can write quantized beats in triplets.
There are other degrees of swing though, which is why a lot of sequencers have more complicated groove patterns. Or yeah, you can turn quantize off and do everything by feel if you want.
Otherwise, yeah, short pitched up drum sounds are your friend...

I think the easiest way to understand Triplets is to load up Reason make a short loop and stick it on triplets and hit the keys while record is on!
in the below screenshot you see at the top where it says 1/4, change that to 1/6t (the T = triplet)

Get hold of a garage/2 step loop and some garage samples then try to recreate that loop using samples till you get it perfect. then youll be able to make garage/2 step breaks

ive got quite a few garage break .wav samples if they're any good to ya (individual hits), some are from Grant Nelson, other are off a sample CD i bought years ago, but theyre all good and garagey sounding. The earliest I can do an upload is tomorrow though as im at work at the mo!
Also if youve got FL i can send over a pre made 2 step beat in a FL file if you want to see where everything should go, it was taken from the track "destiny" by Dem2, all the hits individually ripped, then arranged again back in order.

I would be interested in that also. I have never really been into 2step so have never even tried to make it.

At last here are the samples! My PSU went on my home PC
They're all zipped up and are in 3 folders for Kicks, Hi- hats, and snares in .wav format. Most of them are for UK garage.
Samples - Download Link:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OGWF8FTX
Also here is the Dem 2 - Destiny 2-step beat fruity loops file. Do NOT uncompress the zip file when you've downloaded it.
Open Fruity in the normal way, do File -> Open, then browse to the zip file and choose the "open" button, and everything should load up and be in the right place.
